Louisville Bats News Release

BATS CAN'T HOLD ONTO LEAD: Louisville failed to hold onto its 3-0 lead last night, leading Columbus going into the sixth inning before a four-run bottom of the sixth from the Clip Show. Right-hander Domingo Tapia started the game for the Bats, going 2.0 innings before being relieved by originally scheduled starter, left-hander Justin Nicolino . Last night was the second of what will be 18 straight contests against IL West foes for Louisville, its longest such streak since 21 straight to open the 2015 season.

AGAINST COLUMBUS: The Bats and Clippers meet for the fourth of seven series this season, with the first 3 series taking place in Louisville. LOU is 5-7 against COL this season, outscoring the Clip Show 61-56 after Tuesday night's 5-3 loss.

QUACKENBUSH, RAINEY NAMED TO IL ALL-STAR TEAM: Bats right-handed relief pitchers Kevin Quackenbush and Tanner Rainey were named to the International League's 2018 All-Star Team in the Triple-A All-Star Game that will be played at Columbus' Huntington Park on July 11.

-Quackenbush has made 21 appearances for Louisville this season, allowing just two runs (one earned run) in 21.1 innings of work, a 0.42 ERA. He's recorded 8 saves in 9 opportunities, tied for 5th in the International League in saves. He has walked just 2 and struck out 25, with his 12.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio leading the IL (min. 20 IP).

-Rainey has made 23 appearances for Louisville this season, owning a 1.69 ERA (5er/26.2ip) with 2 saves. He's walked 19 and struck out 41, with a 2-2 record. He's allowed opposing hitters to bat just .140 (12-for-86) against him, ranking second in the IL (min. 25 IP).

LEAD BY EXAMPLE: Bats leadoff hitters have proven to be an excellent catalyst for the offense in the month of June. Louisville has employed 4 different leadoff hitters in the month: Nick Senzel (11 games...started 12, but batted in 11), Dilson Herrera (5), Mason Williams (4) and Hernan Iribarren (3). Out of the top spot in the batting order in June, the quartet has hit safely in 22 of 23 games, and reached base safely in all 23. They are batting a combined .462 (43-for-93) with 24 runs scored, 9 doubles, 4 home runs, 21 RBI, 12 walks and 4 stolen bases.

M-WILL: Center fielder Mason Williams doubled to start the game for Louisville, his fourth straight game with a leadoff hit for the Bats. It's the first time a Bats leadoff hitter has started off a game with hits in 4 straight ballgames since Darnell Sweeney led off the game with a hit in 4 straight from August 9-12 last season. Since Williams seized back the leadoff spot, he leads the IL in hits (9), batting .563 with 2 doubles, one home run, 4 RBI, 3 walks and 2 stolen bases since June 23.

ROAD WARRIORS: The Bats have struggled away from Louisville Slugger Field overall this season with their 9-22 record through their first 30 road games, but have now won 4 of their last 6 road games. LOU took two of three from the Toledo Mud Hens from June 15-17, earning its first road series win of 2018. With a win on Wednesday, the Bats would have back-to-back road series wins for the first time since July-August 2017, when they took two of three at Buffalo (7/28-7/30) and two of three at Durham (8/7-8/9).

ALMOST HAD IT: The Bats led 3-0 before eventually falling 5-3 against COL last night, having their 3-game winning streak snapped and falling to 19-16 (.543) when scoring first in a game this season, worst in the IL. Before last night, it had been over a month that LOU lost a game in which it scored first, last occurring on May 22 at Indianapolis, when the Bats led 1-0 early before falling 5-3.
