2018 International League All-Star Team Announced
June 27, 2018 - International League (IL1) News Release
The International League today announced the members of its 2018 All-Star Team. The squad of thirty-three standouts will suit up against the Pacific Coast League's best at the Huntington Bank Triple-A All-Star Game, presented by Gildan. The 31st annual gathering of the classification's top stars will take place at Huntington Park in downtown Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday, July 11 at 7:00 EDT.
The 2018 International League All-Star squad is made up of 13 elected players who have received the most votes from ballots submitted by club's field managers and general managers (1/3), members of the media (1/3), and online fan voting (1/3). The elected players are joined by 20 additional All-Stars selected by the International League office. Each of the IL's fourteen clubs will be represented in Columbus. The members of the IL squad hail from eight different countries including the U.S. (from fifteen different states), Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Lithuania, and Mexico.
The League's winningest clubs will be well represented, highlighted by the West Division leading Toledo Mud Hens with an IL-best four All-Stars. Two-time Triple-A All-Star Chad Huffman returns to the event as the elected designated hitter for the International League, alongside IL long ball leader Christin Stewart, an elected outfielder, elected shortstop Ronny Rodriguez, and selected outfielder Jim Adduci. Lehigh Valley, the top team in the IL North so far this season, boasts three All-Stars including the overall leader in online fan voting, elected first baseman Joey Meneses, League ERA leader and elected starter Enyel De Los Santos, and selected pitcher Cole Irvin, whose eight wins are tied for most in the IL.
The Pawtucket Red Sox will send three players to the midsummer classic as elected All-Stars, a slate which includes starting pitcher Jalen Beeks and reliever Ryan Brasier, plus outfielder Rusney Castillo making his second consecutive appearance for the IL squad. Other returning All-Stars include Buffalo's Jason Leblebijian, elected as the starting third baseman for the second straight time, and a pair of selected players, outfielder Christopher Bostick of Indianapolis and pitcher Jimmy Yacabonis of Norfolk.
The host Columbus Clippers will have a pair of All-Stars shining in front of the hometown fans with elected outfielder Brandon Barnes and selected catcher Francisco Mejia. The other players elected to the IL's starting lineup are catcher Danny Jansen of Buffalo, second baseman Kean Wong of Durham, and reliever Thyago Vieira of Charlotte, each of whom led in the online fan voting in addition to receiving significant support from the League's field managers, general managers, and media.
The International League had been victorious in four straight Triple-A All-Star Games before dropping last season's battle in Tacoma, Washington. The IL owns a 12-8 advantage in the two decades since the event changed to the current International League vs. Pacific Coast League format.
The Huntington Bank Triple-A All-Star Game presented by Gildan will be broadcast live on MiLB.TV and the Triple-A All-Star Game Radio Network on July 11 and will be broadcast on MLB Network on July 18. All-Star festivities in Columbus begin with the Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby and Skills Competition on Monday, July 9, part of the 10th season celebration for Huntington Park that will include hosting the 2018 Gildan Triple-A National Championship Game in September. Fans who are interested in more information on the events, or would like to purchase tickets, are encouraged to visit the official website of the host Columbus Clippers (clippersbaseball.com).
