Louisville Bats News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Louisville Bats (30-44) won a thriller Wednesday night at Huntington Park, defeating the Columbus Clippers (38-39) by an 11-10 score in the series finale. The win gives the Bats their second straight series victory on the road, the first time they have won back-to-back road series this season.
The Bats' offense was on fire right out of the gates, starting the game with four consecutive hits and totaling five runs in the top frame on six hits. Mason Williams notched a leadoff hit for the fifth consecutive game, while Phillip Ervin, Dilson Herrera, Gabriel Guerrero, Nick Longhi and Chadwick Tromp also contributed hits in the first inning. The five runs in the first were the most runs scored in the first by Louisville since July 17, 2017 vs. Syracuse.
The game was a back-and-forth contest throughout, with Louisville leading 5-2 before Columbus exploded for a five-run inning of their own, taking a 7-5 lead in the fourth inning. The Bats would take the lead back on back-to-back home runs hit by Herrera and Ervin, 9-7, in the sixth, before the resilient Clippers tied the game in the home half of the inning to make it a 9-9 ballgame.
The Bats would regain the lead in the top of the eighth, 11-9, on another set of back-to-back home runs, this time by Ervin and D.J. Peterson. Peterson's home run was the fifth for Louisville as a club tonight, the first time the Bats have hit that many homers in a game since July 20, 2010 at Charlotte.
On the mound, right-handed starter Jose Lopez struggled for Louisville, going 3.2 innings and giving up six earned runs on five hits and one home run, walking three and striking out six on 90 pitches, 56 strikes, unable to take advantage of the five runs his offense scored in the top of the first.
Evan Mitchell, Brandon Finnegan, Tanner Rainey, Wandy Peralta and Kevin Quackenbush combined for 5.1 innings out of the bullpen. Finnegan made his first relief appearance since being moved to Louisville's bullpen, allowing a two-run home run to Columbus' Yu Chang in one inning of work.
Rainey and Quackenbush, the two Bats' representatives for this year's Triple-A All-Star Game, were the only two Louisville pitchers who did not allow a run tonight, with Quackenbush notching his ninth save of the season in 10 tries. The right-hander came into the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth, making tonight his first four-out save of 2018.
Herrera went 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI, while Ervin also recorded a multi-homer game, going 2-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and a walk. Tonight marked the first time that multiple Louisville batters hit two or more home runs in one game since Jim Chamblee and Dane Sardinha each hit two home runs for the Bats on May 3, 2004 at Charlotte in a 12-1 win.
The Bats travel to Toledo to begin a four-game series with the IL West Division-leading Mud Hens, with first pitch Thursday set for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Homer Bailey (0-1, 12.00) will get the ball for Louisville on Major League rehab assignment, with right-hander Kyle Dowdy (3-3, 4.12) set to pitch for the Hens.
