Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - In an announcement made today by the International League, Gwinnett Stripers' left-handed pitcher Kolby Allard, first baseman Carlos Franco and right-handed pitcher Evan Phillips have been selected to participate in the 2018 Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 11 at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio.
Allard, Franco and Phillips were among the 20 players selected by the International League office for the league's 33-player roster. An additional 13 players were elected by a combined vote of IL field managers and general managers, members of the media and online fan voting at MiLB.com.
Allard, 20, is 5-3 with a 2.60 ERA (25 ER in 86.2 IP) over a team-high 14 starts in his Triple-A debut with Gwinnett. He currently ranks among IL pitching leaders in innings (T-3rd, 86.2), WHIP (4th, 1.14), ERA (5th, 2.60), fewest baserunners per 9.0 IP ratio for starters (5th, 10.49) and starts (T-5th, 14). Rated the Atlanta Braves' No. 6 prospect and the No. 51 prospect in baseball by MLB.com, Allard posted 10 consecutive quality starts from April 28-June 21, going 4-1 with a 2.17 ERA (16 ER in 66.1 IP) in that span. The San Clemente, Calif. native is a midseason All-Star for the second time in his career, as he was also selected to the Double-A Southern League All-Star Game in 2017.
Franco, 26, is batting .260 (73-for-281) with 16 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, 38 runs scored and 49 RBIs in 76 games during his second season with Gwinnett. He currently ranks among IL leaders in RBIs (1st, 49), games (2nd, 76), home runs (T-3rd, 11), at-bats (4th, 281), total bases (T-5th, 124), runs (T-7th, 38), extra-base hits (T-8th, 28) and hits (T-10th, 73). The Braves named him Gwinnett's Player of the Month for April after he batted .250 (22-for-88) with five doubles, four home runs and 18 RBIs in 22 games. A native of Bani, Dominican Republic, Franco is a midseason All-Star for the first time at any level.
Phillips, 23, is 4-4 with a 2.31 ERA (9 ER in 35.0 IP) and six saves (6-for-7) in 26 relief appearances during his second season with Gwinnett. He currently ranks among IL relief leaders in strikeouts per 9.0 IP ratio (4th, 12.86) and saves (T-9th, 6). Phillips posted a 0.85 ERA (3 ER in 31.1 IP) and all six of his saves over 23 games from April 12-June 19, and had his contract selected by Atlanta for the first time on June 24. He did not make his Major League debut before being optioned back to Triple-A on June 25. A native of Salisbury, Md., Phillips is a midseason All-Star for the second time in his career, having also earned selection to the Advanced-A California/Carolina League All-Star Game in 2016.
Gwinnett's three All-Star selections are tied for second-most in team history and are the most since 2011, when four players - outfielders Jose Constanza and Stefan Gartrell, first baseman Mauro Gomez and pitcher Julio Teheran - were selected.
The Huntington Bank Triple-A All-Star Game, presented by Gildan, is the 31st annual game between the top players of the International League and the Pacific Coast League. The game takes place at Huntington Park, home of the Columbus Clippers, on Wednesday, July 11 at 7:00 p.m. EDT. MiLB.TV and the Triple-A All-Star Game Radio Network will broadcast the game live on July 11, and it will also air on MLB Network on July 18.
