Charlotte Knights News Release
(DURHAM, NC) - RHP Donny Roach was selected to the 2018 International League All-Star Team on Wednesday morning. In the afternoon, he enhanced his All-Star credentials with one of the finest starts of the season by a Charlotte Knights pitcher.
Roach (9-2, 2.65) allowed just one run over eight impressive innings to guide the Charlotte Knights to a 5-1 win over the Durham Bulls from Durham Bulls Athletic Park in game one of a day/night doubleheader on Wednesday in Durham, NC. With the win, the Knights have now taken two of the first three games in the series and will look for the series win in game two of the twin bill tonight at 7:05 p.m. The Knights are 7-4 against the Bulls in 2018 this season.
Making his 15th start of the season (16th overall appearance), Roach tossed a season-high eight innings -- the longest outing by a Knights hurler in 2018 -- and gave up just one run on six hits en route to his International League-leading ninth win of the season. Roach, 28, was efficient in his eight innings of work, throwing just 92 pitches (59 for strikes). For the season, Roach lowered his ERA from 2.79 to 2.65. He has won his last six starts and improved to 5-0 with a 0.98 ERA in June (six games, five starts).
Offensively for the Knights, the team backed Roach with six hits including two long home runs. Left fielder Eloy Jiménez -- the top ranked prospect in the Chicago White Sox system -- launched his second home run of the season with the Knights, a solo shot in the fourth inning off Durham starter Andrew Moore (2-3, 3.94). Catcher Dustin Garneau kept the scoring alive in the fourth inning with a three-run home run off Moore, his second of the season with the club. The Knights scored four of their five runs in the inning to win the first game of the doubleheader.
RHP Thyago Vieira, who was elected to the 2018 International League All-Star Team, pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Vieira, 24, struck-out one batter in the final inning.
The Knights and Bulls will conclude their three-day, four-game series with tonight's 7:05 p.m. game, the second of today's day/night doubleheader. Pre-game radio coverage is set for 6:50 p.m. from Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time Knights broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action from Durham, NC.
