NORFOLK, VA - The Norfolk Tides scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 6-5 win over the Gwinnett Stripers in the finale of the four-game series Wednesday afternoon at Harbor Park.

With the loss, the Stripers dropped to 1-8 in extra-inning games this season and have now lost six in a row.

The Stripers went to the bottom of the 10th with a 5-3 lead after scoring two in the top of the frame. With reliever D. J. Snelten in to pitch, the Stripers started with Alejandro Salazar on second base per the new rules this season in Minor League Baseball. Pinch hitter Preston Tucker moved Salazar to third with a fly ball to right. Rio Ruiz walked and Michael Reed was walked intentionally to load the bases. Snelten then walked Carlos Franco, pushing in Salazar for a 4-3 lead. A wild pitch later allowed Ruiz to score for a 5-3 Stripers advantage.

But in the bottom of the 10th, with Chad Bell working in his second inning and Renato Nunez beginning the inning on second, Adrian Marin stroked a double to right scoring Nunez to cut the lead to 5-4. After Bell retired the next two batters, he walked D.J. Stewart to put two on for Pedro Alvarez. Alvarez launched a double off the wall in left-center scoring both Marin and Stewart for the 6-5 win.

The Stripers had taken the early lead by plating three runs in the top of the third off Norfolk starter John Means. Sean Kazmar Jr. and Chris Stewart led off with back to back singles, and after one out, a double to right by Ruiz plated both for a 2-0 lead. Reed followed with a double to left, scoring Ruiz to push the lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the third, Gwinnett starter Jason Hursh gave up a one-out double to Ruben Tejada and Cedric Mullins followed with a double to center, scoring Tejada to cut the lead to 3-1. Joey Rickard then stroked an RBI single to right, sending Mullins home to make it 3-2.

The Tides knotted up the game in the bottom of the sixth against Gwinnett reliever Michael Mader. Mullins led off with a single to center, moved to second on a ground out by Rickard and took third on a wild pitch. Alvarez then delivered a two-out single to right scoring Mullins. The game remained deadlocked until the wild extra frame.

Hursh pitched 2.2 innings with three hits, two earned runs and three strikeouts in a spot start. Mader went 4.0 innings with four hits, one earned run, two walks and two strikeouts. Evan Phillips pitched 1.1 inning with three strikeouts. Bell (L, 2-1) tossed 1.2 innings with two hits, three runs (two earned), one walk and four strikeouts.

For Norfolk, Means went 6.0 innings with five hits, three earned runs and seven strikeouts. Eddie Gamboa worked 3.0 scoreless innings with three hits and one walk. Snelten (W, 1-1) pitched 1.0 inning with two runs (one earned), four walks and one strikeout.

At the plate, Ruiz led Gwinnett with a 2-for-4 day, including a double and two RBIs. Alvarez had the big bat for Norfolk by going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.

The Gwinnett Stripers (34-44) continue the road trip Thursday night at 7:04 p.m. in Charlotte with game one of a four-game series against the Knights. The Stripers have not announced a starting pitcher. Right-hander Jordan Stephens (3-2, 3.45 ERA) will start for Charlotte.
