Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, TN - The Memphis Redbirds were outgunned in the later innings, dropping a 12-6 game to the Charlotte Knights on Thursday night at AutoZone Park. Charlotte put up seven runs in the sixth inning and scored at least a run in the final five frames.
Memphis initially took a 6-0 lead thanks in large part to Juan Yepez. Yepez doubled in the game's first run in the first inning and mashed a two-run home run in the third. Three more runs crossed in the third on a two-run double from Clint Coulter and a Cory Spangenberg RBI single.
Lenyn Sosa put Charlotte on the board with a solo home run and had a big two-run single with the bases loaded in the sixth inning that brought the score to 6-4. After an RBI single brought the deficit to one, Blake Rutherford blasted a three-run shot to put the Knights up 8-7. That capped off a seven-run sixth inning and Charlotte never looked back.
The Knights tallied runs in the seventh and eighth while Mark Payton crushed a two-run homer in the ninth to cap off the scoring.
Kyle Kubat (6-3) earned the win after allowing six runs in five innings. T.J. McFarland (0-1) took the loss after allowing three hits that brought in six runs.
The Memphis Redbirds (60-59) square off with the Charlotte Knights (49-71) in game four of a six-game series on Friday evening at AutoZone Park. For tickets and more information, fans can call 901-721-6000 or visit www.memphisredbirds.com.
