Worcester IceCats News Release
WORCESTER, MA- It was announced today by St. Louis Blues Senior Vice President/General Manager and IceCats General Manager of Hockey Operations Larry Pleau, that two players have been dealt from the IceCats roster and one has been added. Winger Ryan Ready was acquired by the Blues from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Sergei Varlamov, while defenseman Tom Koivisto was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes for future considerations.
Ready, who had spent the previous two-plus seasons with the Manitoba Moose, is expected to report directly to Worcester. The 6-0, 195 pound left wing was originally a fourth round selection of the Calgary Flames in 1997 (100th overall), but was signed as a free agent by Vancouver on June 19, 1999. He began his pro career in Syracuse and the following season was in Kansas City of the former IHL. Since the 2001-2002 campaign, he has played exclusively in Manitoba. His AHL totals (Syracuse/Manitoba) include 274 games, 58 goals, 88 assists for 146 points: 274(58/88/146). He has 239 PIM's in those games. The 25-year old Ontario native played his junior hockey in Belleville, amassing 229 points in 258 games.
Varlamov was in his second season for Worcester. Last season he led Worcester in scoring with 38 assists and 61 overall points and was selected to participate in the AHL All-Star Classic. He departs this season with seven goals and 16 assists in 43 games: 43(7/16/23). Koivisto was also in his second season behind the IceCats crest. The Finnish-born defenseman had scored four goals and 17 points in 28 games this season: 28(4/13/17).
