March 9, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
The Providence Bruins announced today that the Boston Bruins have acquired center Brad Boyes from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for former P-Bruins defenseman Jeff Jillson. Boyes has been reassigned to Providence and could be in the lineup when the Bruins visit the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.
Boyes, who turns 22 next month, is playing in his second professional season. He currently ranks fourth in AHL scoring, with 25-35-60 totals in 61 games with San Jose's AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Barons. Boyes was originally selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs with their first pick, 24th overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He had 141-168-309 totals in 233 games with the Erie Otters (OHL) from 1998-2002. Boyes spent most of the 2002-03 season with Toronto's AHL affiliate, the St. John's Maple Leafs, posting 23-28-51 totals in 65 games. He represented the Leafs on the Canadian Team at the 2003 AHL All-Star Classic.
The 6'1", 195-pound Boyes was traded by Toronto to San Jose on March 5, 2003, as part of a deal for Owen Nolan. After the trade, he posted 7-6-13 totals in 15 games with the Barons. Boyes was named to the 2002-03 AHL All-Rookie Team, as his goal (30) and point (64) totals ranked second among AHL rookies. Boyes, who hails from Mississauga, Ontario, made his NHL debut with San Jose on March 7 against the Dallas Stars.
Boyes received several awards while playing for Erie. He played in the Canadian Hockey League's 2000 Top Prospects Game, on the same team as new teammate Kris Vernarsky (also a 2000 Draft pick by Toronto). He was also named an OHL Second-Team All-Star in 2000-01, and an OHL First-Team All-Star in 2001-02. Boyes was the OHL's Most Valuable Player in both the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons, and was named a CHL Second-Team All-Star in 2001-02. He was also the CHL's Scholastic Player of the Year in 1999-2000, and was the league's Sportsman of the Year in 2001-02.
Jillson, who was originally selected by San Jose with its first pick, 14th overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, was acquired by Boston from the Sharks as part of a deal for Kyle McLaren on January 23, 2003. The 23-year-old native of North Smithfield, RI had 4-11-15 totals and 26 PIM in 30 games with the P-Bruins after the trade. He had 4-10-14 totals and 35 PIM in 50 games with Boston this season.
