17 former NHLers confirmed for "Heroes of Hometown Hockey" game

The Hamilton Bulldogs announced today that 17 former Hamilton area NHL players, coaches and officials have confirmed to be in attendance at the "Heroes of Hometown Hockey" game on Friday, March 26th at 7:00 p.m., when the Bulldogs host the St. John's Maple Leafs at Copps Coliseum. The following individuals will be present and honoured in a pre-game ceremony:

CONFIRMED ATTENDEES:

Harry Howell - Hockey Hall of Famer, played in 1411 NHL games with N.Y. Rangers, Oakland, California and Los Angeles, scoring 418 points (94-324-428) - won James Norris Trophy as NHL's top defenceman in 1966-67.

Ric Nattress - this defenceman played in 536 NHL games (Montreal, Calgary, St. Louis, Toronto & Philadelphia), won the Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames in 1989

Frank Caprice - a goaltender, who played in over 100 career games with the Vancouver Canucks (1982-1988)

Don Edwards - played goal in ten seasons in the NHL with Buffalo, Calgary and Toronto and won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goaltender in 1979-80

Ed Gilbert - a 1972 draft choice of the Montreal Canadiens skated in 166 NHL games as a centre for Kansas City and Pittsburgh

Ron Murphy - this left-winger played in 889 NHL games with New York, Chicago, Detroit and Boston and produced 479 points (205-274-479) - won the Stanley Cup with Chicago in 1961.

Murray Oliver - a forward skated in 1127 NHL games with Detroit, Boston, Toronto and Minnesota, scoring 728 points (274-454-728) - played in five consecutive NHL All-Star Games (1963-68)

Leo Reise - a forward, who tallied 109 points (28-81-109) in 494 NHL games with Chicago, Detroit and N.Y. Rangers - won the Stanley Cup twice with the Detroit Red Wings (1950 & 1952)

John Miszuk - this blue-liner played in 237 NHL games with four teams including: Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia and Minnesota - AHL Second Team All-Star in 1965

Jack Birch - was an assistant coach with N.Y. Rangers from 1985 to 1987

Bill Mahoney - was an assistant coach with Washington (1980-82) and head coach with Minnesota in (1983-85)

Ron Sedlbauer - played in 430 NHL games with Vancouver, Chicago and Toronto - posted 229 points (143-86-229)

Stan Jonathan - a 5' 8 winger played 392 of 411 NHL career games with the Boston Bruins (1975-82), finished career with Pittsburgh - posted 201 points (91-110-201) over NHL career

Pat Hickey - skated in 644 NHL games, playing for N.Y. Rangers, Colorado, Toronto, Quebec and St. Louis - tallied 404 points (192-212-404) over ten seasons

Jack Stoddard - played in two NHL seasons with the N.Y. Rangers (1951-53), skated in 80 games, and had 31 points (16-15-31)

Bill Friday & Bob Myers - combined have officiated close to 3000 professional hockey games

The Hamilton Bulldogs and the City of Hamilton will host a pre-game reception on Friday, March 26th at Liuna Station (360 James St. N., Hamilton) to honour the "Heroes of Hometown Hockey". The buffet dinner will begin at 4:00 p.m. Tickets to the dinner are available for $40, or $50 for the dinner and a ticket to the game. The Hamilton Bulldogs have announced that all eleven Hamilton/Burlington FORTINOS locations will be supporting Travis' Battle, by offering $10 upper bowl tickets for the "Heroes of Hometown Hockey" game. Proceeds from the upper bowl tickets will go towards Travis' Battle, a charitable fund set up to support Travis Carter, a six-year-old Ancaster boy who suffers from Battens Disease. Travis has been one of ten children chosen to receive experimental surgery.

As well, Hamilton hockey fans still have the opportunity to vote for the "Heroes of Hometown Hockey All-Time Team" at Hamilton area "Pizza Pizza" locations. All players and coaches on the ballot are from the Hamilton area or have made significant contributions to Hamilton hockey. Fans can make their vote for the top three forwards, two defenceman, one goaltender and one coach at any of the eleven Hamilton 'Pizza Pizza' locations. The ballots will be collected on Tuesday, March 16th, 2004 and the individuals on the ballots with the most votes will be named to the "Heroes of Hometown Hockey All-Time Team", which will be announced at the "Heroes of Hometown Hockey" game.
