LAST WEEK â Grrrowl drop opener in Charlotte Friday; Raise championship banner Saturday The Greenville Grrrowl opened the ECHL season with a 5-2 loss in Charlotte on Friday night at Circket Arena. On Saturday, the defending Kelly Cup Champions raised the banner and passed out rings to five returning players from last year's team. The Grrrowl opened a 6-3 lead in the third period, but the South Carolina Stingrays rallied for 7-6 shootout win.
FRI. OCT. 11th @ CHR, 5-2 L: Defensemen ERIC LIND and LUKE SELLARS gave Greenville a 2-0 lead by 5:14 of the second period, but a 4-goal outburst in the span of 7 minutes and 16 seconds in the second period helped the Checkers rally. Charlotte rookie Takahito Suzuki scored 3 of those goals. The Grrrowl were outshot 27-25. Att.: 6,101.
SAT NOV 17th vs GBO, 5-3 L: After the banner raising ceremony, the Grrrowl and Stingrays traded a pair of first period goals. Greenville scored the 4 of the next 5 goals, but the game ended with the Stingrays winning 7-6 in a shootout. MIKE HURLEY recorded 2 goals and 2 assists for the Grrrowl, who were outshot 40-33. PLAYER OF THE WEEK â RW MIKE HURLEY RW MIKE HURLEY recorded 2 goals, 2 assists, 4 points and 5 shots on goal in two games for the Grrrowl last week. All 4 points were recorded in Saturday's home-opener against the South Carolina Stingrays. Hurley was acquired during the off-season after playing last year with the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL).
COACH JOHN MARKS SAID: On the games... "I saw some good things, but I saw some things that need attention, too. We played hard, but we didn't play as smart as we need to."
On the championship banner raising,,, "It was certainly very emotional. There are many players who have never raised a banner, and it's a testament to what we were able to achieve last season."
THIS WEEK â Grrrowl open a home and home series in Columbia on Friday
The Grrrowl play back-to-back games against the in-state rival Columbia Inferno starting Friday at The Carolina Coliseum (7:05 PM, News Radio 1330 & 950, WORD). Greenville then hosts Columbia Saturday night at the BI-LO Center (7:05 PM).
FRI, OCT. 18th, 7:05 PM: The Grrrowl travel to the Carolina Coliseum to face the Columbia Inferno (7:05 PM) in the first of nine (9) regular-season meetings. The Inferno opened the season with a 6-3 win over Columbus on Friday, then dropped a 5-2 decision at Pee Dee on Saturday... In just 2 games, the Inferno have allowed two (2) shorthanded goals... They have been outscored 4-1 in the first period this season... Columbia is affiliated with the American Hockey League's Manitoba Moose, and the National Hockey League's Vancouver Canucks.
SAT, OCT. 19th, 7:05 PM: The defending Kelly Cup Champions return home to host the Inferno in the back side of this home and home series. The Grrrowl are looking for their first win at the BI-LO Center this season...These teams are rivals in the ECHL Southeast Division... Last season the Grrrowl were 4-4-0 against the Inferno.
ON THE AIR: Friday night's game in Columbia (7:05 PM) will be broadcast live on NewsRadio 1330 &95, WORD, and on the web at grrrowl.com. Pre-game coverage begins at 7:20 PM. Saturday's game will be carried only on the internet at grrrowl.com with live audio streaming provided by Vantage Point Media.
