Baton Rouge Kingfish News Release
A late third period surge by the Kingfish was not enough to propel Baton Rouge past the Ice Pilots in Pensacola as the Kingfish fell 5-4.
Greg Pankewicz gave the Ice Pilots a 1-0 lead on the power play as he fired a one timer from the left face off circle past Paxton Schafer. Chris Gignac and David Oliver added the assists on the goal.
Josh Harrold extended the Ice Pilot lead to 2-0 as he fired a low wrist shot through a crowd in front of the net that beat Schafer. Ken Cloutier and Chad Thereu added the assists.
Jason Norrie cut the lead in half as he punched the puck past Brian Eklund at the 12:29 mark of the first. Trevor Demmans and Wes Scanzano added the assists on the power play goal.
Pankewicz's second goal of the night regained the two-goal lead for the Ice Pilots. Louis Dumont and Cloutier set up Pankewicz on the play.
With a little over three minutes left in the first, Glen Crawford was hauled down on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. Crawford converted on the penalty shot and cut the lead to one.
Pensacola controlled the second as they tallied two in the period including the game winner.
Kevin Mackie put the Ice Pilots up 4-2 at the 4:15 mark of the second as Trevor Allman added the assists.
Brad Dexter picked up the game winner on the power play goal at the 18:16 mark of the second as Dumont and Gignac added the assists.
Jerry Gernander tallied both third period goals for Baton Rouge to get the Kingfish back into the contest. His first, an unassisted tally at the 7:28 mark of the third cut the lead to 2.
Trevor Demmans and Sean Peach set up Gernander's second tally, a shorthanded goals at the 13:36 mark of the third period.
The Kingfish could get no closer with Schafer lifted in favor of an extra attacker in the last minute of play.
Schafer 26 saves in the losing effort at the Kingfish were outshot 31-28, while going 1-13 on the power play.
The Kingfish are back in action on Friday as they travel to Jackson to take on the Bandits followed by Saturday's tilt with the Ice Gators in Lafayette.
