Baton Rouge Kingfish News Release
Opening night: Baton Rouge's 7-6 win on Friday was just the Kingfish's second opening night victory since the 1996-97 season. The Kingfish have never won more than two games in a row to open the season.
Retired: Before Friday's opener, the Kingfish retired their second jersey, Scott Humenick's #55. Humenick, who played for the Fish during the 1998-99, suffered a career-ending stroke during that season. Humenick has recovered and he and his wife live in Knoxville, TN.
Even Strength? The Kingfish have picked up more than half of their total goals in this young season on the power play. Of 13 goals scored, 7 have come on the power play. Baton Rouge went 4-10 on the man advantage on Friday against Jackson, 2-10 on Sunday against Mississippi and 1-11 on Sunday at Pensacola.
Slow Start: The Kingfish have fallen behind early in the first period in their first three games. Jackson jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first before the Kingfish picked up 6 second period goals en-route to the win. On Saturday, Mississippi also opened up a 3-0 lead and was able to hold onto the 3-2 win. In Pensacola Sunday, the Ice Pilots scored the first two goals and were able to hold on to the 5-4 win.
Coming on Strong: The Kingfish have picked up their goals in the second and third periods this past weekend. The Fish scored 6 in the second on Friday, tallied their only two in the third on Saturday, while Jerry Gernander picked up two in the final stanza on Sunday.
Do we need six? The Kingfish have tallied two shorthanded goals in three games. Glen Crawford scored the first shorthanded tally in Friday's win as he beat Jackson goaltender Adam Hauser. Jerry Gernander picked up the other on Sunday in Pensacola as he punched in a centering pass from a fore-checking Trevor Wasyluk.
Tripping! Glen Crawford was tripped up on a break away chance late in the first period on Sunday in Pensacola. The speedy forward was awarded a penalty shot instead of the Kingfish going on the power play. Crawford made the Ice Pilots pay the price as the buried the penalty shot behind Ice Pilot goaltender Brian Eklund at the 17:36 mark of the first period.
