Men O\' War Hit the Road for the First Time

Lexington, KY- The Lexington Men O' War finished opening weekend with a record of 0-1-1. The MOW lost a heartbreaker on opening night falling to the Greensboro Generals 4-3 in a shootout. On Saturday, the MOW were shutout 3-0 by the Generals and goaltender Daniel Berthiaume.

Game #1, October 11th Men O' War 3, Generals 4 SO

Pete Gardiner was a thorn in the MOW's side on opening night. Gardiner scored a hat trick in regulation play and added the winning goal in the shootout. Jeff Bateman scored the first goal in MOW history 9:10 into the game. Josh Mizerek and David Del Monte scored just 24 seconds apart at the end of the second.

Game #2, October 12th Men O' War 0, Generals 3

Greensboro goaltender Daniel Berthiaume shutout the MOW as he stopped all 27 shots he faced. David Whitworth scored a goal in the first and second periods. Sam Ftorek added an insurance goal with 3:48 left in the second to provide the final 3-0 margin. Dan Murphy was solid in goal for the MOW stopping 25 of 28 shots. The Generals prevailed with a win and the weekend sweep.

Upcoming Games ......

The MOW hit the road for the first time ever this Friday. The team will travel to Peoria to face the Rivermen. During the preseason, the MOW defeated Peoria twice by scores of 4-1 and 2-1 (in a shootout). During the two games vs. the Rivermen, Jared Smyth scored 2 goals and 1 assist for 3 points to lead the MOW in exhibition scoring. The Rivermen finished opening weekend with a record of 1-1-0.

On Sunday, the MOW return to Rupp Arena to battle the Toledo Storm. The Storm roster features former NHL first round pick goaltender Brian Finley. On opening night, Finley stopped 33 of 36 shots as Toledo defeated Peoria 4-3. Erik Anderson contributed a goal and 2 assists on opening night. The Storm finished opening weekend 1-0-1 after losing to Johnstown in overtime on Saturday.

MOW Tracks ......

Along with scoring the first goal in team history, Jeff Bateman leads the MOW in scoring after opening weekend. Bateman recorded a goal and an assist to lead the team with two points...David Del Monte scored his first professional goal on opening night. In 99 games over 4 years at Princeton, Del Monte scored 18 goals...Josh Mizerek scored the first power play goal in MOW history on his only shot of the weekend...The MOW power play struggled on opening weekend going 1-16.
