'Gades Wrap up Season with Shootout Loss

The Richmond Renegades finished the 2002-'03 season 35-31-1 after going 2-1-1 last week. The ‘Gades finished in sixth place in the Northeast Division. Richmond tied a club record with an eight game home winning streak and went 8-0-1 in their last nine at home. The ‘Gades enjoyed their fifth straight .500-plus season.

Wednesday, March 26 @ Trenton WIN 4-1

GAME NOTES: The ‘Gades jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead and held on to stretch their unbeaten streak vs. Trenton to six games. Dan Lombard stopped 29 of 30 shots. Four ‘Gades scored goals. Peter Hogan had three assists.

Friday, March 28 @ Roanoke LOSS 5-2

GAME NOTES: The ‘Gades four game road winning streak came to an end in their final road game of the season. The Express scored in the first minute and led all the way. Joe Dusbabek had a goal and two assists for Roanoke.

Saturday, March 29 @ Charlotte WIN 6-3

GAME NOTES: The ‘Gades tied a club record with their eighth straight home win and knocked the Checkers out of the playoffs. Richmond jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first period and blew the game open with two third period goals. Six ‘Gades had two point games.

Sunday, March 30 @ Roanoke LOSS 4-3 (SO)

GAME NOTES: The ‘Gades finished the season with a tough shootout loss. Richmond carried a 3-1 lead into the third period but Cam Bristow's second goal of the game with 5:04 to play forced OT. Bristow scored again in the shootout to win it. Richard Pitirri and Russ Bartlett had a goal and assist.

‘GADES NOTES: The ‘Gades finished the season unbeaten in their last nine games at home (8-0-1). Richmond's club record tying eight game home winning streak ended in their final game with a shootout loss to Roanoke Sunday. The ‘Gades matched the '92-'93 club's home win streak record. Richmond wound up the season with 25 home wins, tied for second best in club history (the record of 27 was set in 1995-'96). The ‘Gades played their final three games with 13 skaters due to call-ups and injuries. 12 ‘Gades were called up to the AHL this season. Richmond went 10-3-3 in their last 16 games and went 5-1-1 in their last seven. Sandy Lamarre finished the season with a five game scoring streak. Jon Zion earned ECHL All Rookie and second team All Star honors. Zion, Leon Hayward, Daniel Goneau, Jayme Filipowicz, and Garret Stroshein finished the season in the AHL. Zion had points in his last five games as a ‘Gade. Marc Magliarditi is sixth in ECHL history in career wins with 134. The ‘Gades lost their last six overtime/shootouts after winning their first seven. The ‘Gades missed the playoffs in back to back seasons for the first time in club history. Richmond has had five straight .500-plus seasons. Josh Harrold and Nick Lent missed the final week of the season due to injuries. The ‘Gades scored five or more goals 12 times at home this season (that means free bread sticks from Little Caesar's Pizza). Dan Lombard went 4-1-1 in his last six starts. The crowd of 8,011 on hand for Saturday's win over Charlotte was the largest of the season for a Renegades game home or away and was the biggest since opening night of 2001-'02. The ‘Gades went 4-3-2 on a season-long nine game road trip that ended Friday in Roanoke. The ‘Gades lost at Roanoke to end a four game road winning streak. Lars Pettersen was 13th in the league in scoring. Jon Zion led ECHL rookie defensemen in scoring and was fourth amongst all d-men in points. Leon Hayward tied for the league lead in shorthanded goals by rookies. Richmond was sixth in the league in penalty killing (83.5%). The ‘Gades were the least penalized club in the league. The Renegades enjoyed a skate with the children from Sam's Mobility Club, a group for visually impaired youngsters from around Central Virginia last week. Renegades broadcaster John Emmett will handle the radio play by play chores for Roanoke Express playoff games. Ryan Van Buskirk, Dan Lombard, and Peter Hogan have earned post-season AHL call-ups. Van Buskirk and Lombard will join Portland, Hogan will join Hamilton. Hogan, Dan Vandermeer, and Nick Lent established pro career highs for goals.
