Gulls and Condors Deadlocked Going Into Final Week

March 31, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO -- Here we go: It's the West Coast Hockey League's final week of the regular season and the San Diego Gulls and Bakersfield Condors are in a dead heat for second place.

San Diego (42-21-5) and Bakersfield (40-20-9) each have 89 points, but you've still got to give the Blue and Orange the edge. First, the Gulls have four games left, while the Condors only have three. Second, the Gulls have two more wins than Bakersfield, the tiebreaker if the two finish with same amount of points. Third, the Gulls have the "easier" schedule.

The Blue and Orange finish the regular season against the two teams not making the playoffs: the Anchorage Aces and Long Beach Ice Dogs. Bakersfield concludes its season against the Fresno Falcons and first-place Idaho Steelheads. That withstanding, it sure promises to be one exciting week.

NOTES: The Gulls went 1-1-1 last week against the Steelheads. They are the only team to have a winning record against Idaho (6-5-3)... Trevor Koenig, who's 1-3-2 in his last six games, is three wins away from 100 in his Gulls career... San Diego is 25-7-1 with Kevin Grant in the lineup... R.J. Enga has now scored at least 27 goals in each of his eight professional seasons...

TRANSACTIONS: Mark Pederson was placed on the 14-day injured list, which will keep him out the remainder of the regular season... Kevin Grant was activated from IR... Rookie Miguel Delisle signed... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera remain with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears...

COMMUNITY UPDATE: Saturday: The Gulls will be holding a playoff "Chalk Talk," presented by Baja Fresh, at the Sports Arena before they take on the Aces at 7 p.m. This clinic is designed to educate all fans about the intricacies of hockey, including special playoff rules and the specific tactics that will be used against their 2003 playoff opponent(s). Head coach Steve Martinson and select Gulls players will lead the chalk talk, which will also include on-ice demonstrations and an exclusive VIP locker room tour. For $30, you get the clinic, lunch provided by Baja Fresh and a ticket to that night's Gulls-Aces game.

April 7: This is your last chance to wine and dine with your favorite Gulls players at the Pucks & Pasta Charity dinner at the Downtown Hard Rock Café. Come out and support the Gulls and City of Hope's National Medical Research Center by joining them for a night of food and fun at 6:30 p.m. You'll be a part of question and answer sessions, raffles and auctions for autographed Gulls memorabilia!

RECAP:

Gulls 2 @ STEELHEADS 3 (SO), Wednesday, March 26: San Diego was up 2-0 midway through the game, but Idaho came back to tie it and eventually won it in a shootout. Enga and Mike Garrow gave the Gulls a two-goal cushion, but Ben Keup and Adam Copeland scored back-to-back goals to knot it. In the shootout, the Steelheads beat Koenig three times, while the Gulls beat Blair Allison twice.

GULLS 3 @ Steelheads 1: Friday, March 28: Again, the Gulls jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but this time were able to make it stand up. Sylvain Deschatelets and Cory Cyrenne got things starting, giving San Diego the two-goal advantage in the first period. Idaho's Joe Rybar cut the lead in half before Samy Nasreddine answered for the Blue and Orange. The loss was only Idaho's fourth on home ice this season, two coming from the Gulls.

Gulls 3 @ STEELHEADS 4: Saturday, March 29: It was a seesaw battle all the way but the Steelheads, led by Copeland's two goals, came out on top. Idaho took a 1-0 lead before the Gulls scored two straight to take the lead themselves. Then the Steelheads netted two more before San Diego tied it again. Copeland put the Steelheads up for good two minutes into the third period.

THIS WEEK:

San Diego closes out its four-game road trip Wednesday night in Long Beach. The Gulls finish the regular season at the Sports Arena with games against Anchorage on Friday and Saturday and Long Beach on Sunday. All games can be heard live on AM1130-KSDO with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show broadcasts live every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on wsradio.com with Tera Black and Jeremy Zager hosting.
