Pee Dee Pride Weekly

March 31, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Myrtle Beach Thunderboltz News Release

LAST WEEK: Pee Dee went 2-1-1 in the final week of the regular season, and finished the season with a record of 40-26-6 for 86 points, and finished in third place in the Southeast Division. The Pride will take on the South Carolina Stingrays in the 2003 Kelly Cup Playoffs Southeast Division Semifinals starting on Wednesday night.

Tuesday, March 25 @ Augusta PRIDE 5 Lynx 0

Ron Vogel was sharp in net, as he turned aside all 46 shots he faced to record his fourth shutout of the season. After a scoreless first period, the Pride offense awoke in the second period, as Wes Goldie, Derek Halldorson and Preston Mizzi all scored. Halldorson added his second of the night 13:40 into the third period, and rookie Peter Fregoe, playing in his first professional game, added an empty net tally to set the final.

Thursday, March 27 v. Greenville PRIDE 5 Grrrowl 3

Pee Dee raced out to a 4-0 lead courtesy of goals by Allan Sirois, Matt Reid, Wes Goldie and Mike Glumac. Greenville pulled within two, scoring a pair of goals in the final 2:59 of the second period. Just 32 seconds into the third period, Greg Schmidt gave the Pride some breathing room. The Grrrowl's Chris Lynch made it 5-3 with a score at 16:22 of the third, but Greenville would get no closer.

Saturday, March 29 @ South Carolina Stingrays 4 PRIDE 2

A pair of power-play goals just 48 seconds apart midway through the first period gave the Stingrays an early lead. The Pride would pull within one on a Dan Carriere goal at the 13:51 mark only to see Peter Armbrust put South Carolina back up by two 1:36 later. With just 2.1 second remaining in the second period, Eric Naud tipped home a shot, bringing the Pride back within one heading into the final period. But, it would be the Stingrays getting the only goal of the final 20 minutes, courtesy of Adam Calder to pick up the win.

Sunday, March 30 @ Augusta Lynx 4 PRIDE 3 (OT)

For only the third time in the 15-year history of the ECHL, neither team recorded a penalty minute during the game. Eric Naud provided the Pride with a quick start, picking up his 10th goal of the season just 33 seconds into the first period. Augusta's Jeff Szwez would tie the game at one 6:01 into the opening stanza. It stayed that way until midway through the second, when the two teams combined to score four goals in a 4:07 span, tying the game at three. In the overtime, Martin Lapointe put home a rebound with 47 seconds left to give the Lynx the win in the regular-season finale.

SOUTHEAST DIVISION SEMIFINALS PREVIEW

The Pride will meet the South Carolina Stingrays in the Southeast Division Semifinals, with game one taking place Wednesday at 7:00 at the North Charleston Coliseum. It is the third time the two teams have met in the playoffs in the last six years, with both teams winning once previously. In both prior series, the team with home-ice advantage lost the series, with Pee Dee winning game five in 1998 in overtime in North Charleston, and the Stingrays returning the favor in 2000, winning game five in Florence in overtime. South Carolina was 7-1-1 against Pee Dee this season. That is strikingly similar to 1999-2000, when the Pride went 7-1-0 in the regular season against the Stingrays, only to see the Stingrays win the playoff series. In order to be successful in the playoff series, the Pride will need to do a better job on the penalty kill than they did in the regular season against South Carolina. Even though they finished the season ranked eighth overall in the league killing off 82.2% of their opponents' power plays, the Pride only killed off 73.1% of South Carolina's power plays, as the Stingrays converted on 14 of 52 power-play chances in the season series. Dave Seitz led South Carolina in scoring against the Pride, tallying three goals and 11 assists for 14 points in the nine-game season series. Matt Reid led the Pride in the head-to-head series with seven goals and four assists for 11 points.

OTHER NOTES

SIX-PACK OF 20-GOAL SCORERS

The Pride finished the regular season with six 20-goal scorers. Mike Glumac led the way with a team rookie record 37 tallies. Matt Reid finished second on the team with a career-high 28 markers. Wes Goldie tallied 27 times, while Preston Mizzi lit the lamp 22 times. Greg Schmidt and Allan Sirois both reached the 20-goal plateau in Sunday's overtime loss to Augusta. It is the third time in Schmidt's career that he has reached the 20-goal mark. Sirois has now notched 20 goals in each of his six professional seasons.

CARRIERE FINISHES THE SEASON HOT

Rookie defenseman Dan Carriere finished the regular season on a tear. Carriere had four points over the last two games of the regular season, and for the week tallied one goal and five assists. He finished the regular season on a five-game point streak.
