Dayton Bombers News Release

The Dayton Bombers finished their final week of East Coast Hockey League play on Sunday at Carver Arena in Peoria with a 4-3 shootout win. The Bombers, however, will not be participating in the Kelly Cup Playoffs for the first time in 12 seasons, ending a memorable 11-season run.

Below is a review of the Bombers' ECHL contests this past week:

3/26/03- BOMBERS 7 @ Cincinnati 4

A pair of scores 46 seconds apart in the early stages of what would become a four-goal third period helped the Dayton Bombers top the Cincinnati Cyclones 7-4 at the U.S. Bank Arena in downtown Cincinnati Wednesday night. Down 4-3 entering the third period, Bombers center Jamie Ling intercepted a clearing attempt and sent a shot past goalie Greg Hewitt to tie the score at the 58 second mark. Moments later, Mike Vellinga found fellow defender Jason Crain on the near side of the ice. Crain, who also had two assists in the game, moved in and teed up a shot that beat Hewitt to give the Bombers a 5-4 lead. Ryan Vince slipped a back-hander past Hewitt for his team-leading 27th goal at 13:59. Then, with goalie Peter Hamerlik spelling Hewitt, the Bombers capped their four-goal surge when Lance Galbraith tallied after Brian Cummings' drive to the net. The Bombers' seven goals scored was a single-game season high. The game featured several lead changes and a hat trick performance by Bombers' forward Jim Leger, who also assisted on Galbraith's goal. Leger, who helped the Bombers battle back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits, put the team ahead at 3:19 of the second period with a rebound goal off a Cummings shot. Netminder Tony Zasowski, a University of Notre Dame college product, made 19 saves to record a win in his Bomber and professional hockey debut.

3/28/03- Peoria 5 @ BOMBERS 2

Tyler Rennette scored twice and goalie Duane Derksen made 38 saves as the Peoria Rivermen topped the Bombers 5-2 on "Fan Appreciation Night" at the Ervin J. Nutter Center Friday night. Bret DeCecco (1-1-2), Greg Davis, and Anthony Belza also scored for the Rivermen. Fred Slukynsky scored a goal for the Bombers and assisted on Jim Leger's first period, short-handed tally.

3/29/03- BOMBERS 1 @ Peoria 6

Tyler Rennette scored two goals, while Jason Lawmaster, Greg Davis, and Mike Nelson added third period insurance goals as the Peoria Rivermen clipped the Bombers 6-1 in the next to last game of the regular season. Lance Galbraith, with assists from Jim Leger and Fred Slukynsky, scored a power play goal for the Bombers.

3/30/03- BOMBERS 4 @ Peoria 3 (SO)

Tony Zasowski made 41 saves through three periods and an overtime as the Dayton Bombers topped the Peoria Rivermen 4-3 in a shootout in the teams' 2002-2003 regular season finale at Carver Arena in Peoria, Illinois Sunday afternoon. Zasowski's win was his second as a professional in as many starts. Richard Naumann assisted on two goals 35 seconds apart midway through the second period to break a tie and give the Bombers a 3-1 lead heading into the third period. Naumann, a rookie out of Sacred Heart University, sent a centering pass in front to Fred Slukynsky, who jammed the puck past Peoria goalie Alfie Michaud at 10:29 of the second period to put the Bombers in front. Naumann's assist was his first as a professional. Slukynsky, the Bombers' top March point producer (15), recorded his 17th goal of the season. Naumann helped onetime Sacred Heart teammate Nick Nutcher notch his first professional goal just 35 seconds after Slukynsky's score. Nutcher, a defenseman, sent a slap shot over the right shoulder of Michaud. But Peoria, which was prevented claim of the Brabham Cup Trophy given to the ECHL overall points leader as a result of the shootout loss, rallied back with third period goals less than two minutes apart by Greg Davis and Tyler Rennette. The Bombers outscored the Rivermen 3-1 in the shootout with goals from Jamie Ling, Fred Slukynsky, and Ryan Vince. Lance Galbriath scored the other Dayton Bombers' goal, his fifth in eight games played with his new team. Randy Rowe scored the other Peoria goal.
