Eagles Use Big Second Period to Fuel 4-1 Win over Stars
November 4, 2021 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
LOVELAND, CO. - Colorado scored three goals in the second period to wash away a 1-0 deficit and propel the Eagles to a 4-1 win over the Texas Stars on Wednesday. Forwards Alex Newhook and Mikhail Maltsev each notched a goal and an assist in the victory, as goaltender Trent Miner earned his first win of the season by turning aside 15 of the 16 shots he faced in the contest. Colorado generated two power-play goals, a shorthanded tally and an even-strength goal en route to the 4-1 triumph over the Stars.
Despite outshooting Texas in the early stages of the contest, it would be the Stars who would strike first on the scoreboard. Forward Oscar Back slid a pass across the crease and fellow forward Riley Tufte tucked it into the back of the net to give Texas a 1-0 edge at the 10:44 mark of the first period.
Still trailing 1-0 to begin the middle frame, the Eagles would storm back in the second period, as a power play would set up defenseman Rob Hamilton to blister a slapshot from the left-wing boards past Stars goalie Jake Oettinger to tie the game at 1-1 at the 3:54 mark of the second stanza.
Minutes later, Colorado would find itself on the penalty kill, but the Eagles would flip the script when Newhook barreled down the ice on a shorthanded breakaway before burying a wrister from the slot to give Colorado a 2-1 advantage with 13:26 left to play in the period.
After killing off consecutive power plays, which included 42 seconds of a 5-on-3, the Eagles would earn a man-advantage of their own and they would make it count. Newhook skated through the left-wing-circle and dished a no-look pass to the right-wing circle where forward Dylan Sikura would fire shot into the back of the net. The tally extended Sikura's point streak to seven games and pushed Colorado's lead to 3-1 at the 17:00 mark of the second period.
After taking a 3-1 advantage into the second intermission, the Eagles would watch the game take a chippy turn, as the third period would see defenseman Andreas Englund drop the gloves with Tufte, while fellow defenseman Dennis Gilbert squared off with Texas defenseman Alex Petrovic. As time ticked down in the game, Colorado would add a little more insurance when forward Jean-Luc Foudy fed a cross-slot pass to Maltsev who would beat Oettinger five-hole to make it 4-1 with 2:19 left in the contest.
The Eagles outshot the Stars 38-16 on the evening, as Colorado finished 2-for-8 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
The Eagles will return to action when they travel to take on the San Diego Gulls on Saturday, November 6th at 8:00pm MT at Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California.
