Broncos Add Eight Prospects in 2021 WHL Prospects Draft

Swift Current, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos added eight prospects during the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft Thursday afternoon, including two selections in the top 10 for the first time in franchise history.

With the sixth overall pick the Broncos went East to Manitoba and selected forward Clarke Caswell of Brandon. The 5'10, 150-pound Caswell is playing for the Brandon Wheat Kings U18 team this season and is far and away the leading scorer amongst 2006-born players in the MU18HL.

In 20 games this season Caswell has scored 23 goals and added 28 assists for 51 points. The next highest scoring 2006-born player in the MU18HL has 26 points. Caswell spent the shortened 2020-21 season with Rink Hockey Academy U15 in Kelowna, scoring 24 points in just five games.

With the very next pick the Broncos stayed in Manitoba by selecting defenceman Luke Fluker seventh overall. Fluker, from Boissevain, Man., is playing for the U18 Southwest Cougars this season and has five goals with 11 assists in 19 games. He is teammates with Broncos listed goalie prospect Owen LaRocque.

The 5'10, right-shot defenceman is second amongst 2006-born defenceman in MU18HL scoring.

With their first of two picks in the second round the Broncos selected Kelowna native Maddix McCagherty 25th overall. The 5'11, 160-pound McCagherty is playing for the Rink Hockey Academy U18 program in Kelowna, scoring four goals with 12 assists in 13 games.

With the final pick in the second round at 45th overall, the Broncos drafted forward Otto Hanson from Edge School Prep U18 in Calgary.

Hanson, a Calgary native, has played 19 games for Edge School this season scoring twice and adding six assists.

With their lone pick in the third round, 48th overall, the Broncos drafted their first Saskatchewan-born prospect by selecting forward Dawson Gerwing from the U18 Battlefords Stars. The Meadow Lake native has seven goals and 11 assists in 22 games with the Stars this season and stands at 6'2 and 201 pounds.

The Broncos had one pick in the fourth round, 70th overall, and used it to select goaltender Ethan Simcoe from the Rink Hockey Academy U16 program in Winnipeg.

Simcoe, from Lac du Bonnet, Man., has appeared in nine games for the RHA U16 team posting a 5-3-1 record with a 2.77 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage.

The Broncos also had one pick in the fifth round, 94th overall, which was acquired at the trade deadline in 2019 from Moose Jaw in exchange for Alec Zawatsky. The pick was used to draft defenceman Ronan Buckberger from the Saskatoon Contacts.

Buckberger, from Saskatoon, has four assists in 18 games with the Contacts this season. He is the son of former Swift Current Broncos forward Ashley Buckberger who played for the Broncos from 1990-1995.

With their final pick of the day, the Broncos selected defenceman Luc Bourdon from the Tisdale Trojans with the 180th overall pick. Bourdon, from Prince Albert, has skated in 22 games with the Trojans this season, recording three assists.
