Aces sweep Victoria 5-2

Alaska Aces News Release

VICTORIA, BC – Kimbi Daniels scored the eventual game-winner and assisted on two others as Alaska completed a three-game sweep of Victoria with a 5-2 victory Sunday at Bear Mountain Arena.

Similar to Saturday's game, where the Salmon Kings battled on even terms with the Aces for much of the contest before falling 3-0, Sunday proved to be a struggle, as Alaska twice took the lead in the first period only to see Victoria rally with an equalizer. Mike Jones opened the game's scoring for the Aces at 11:04 of the first period, blasting home a one-timer after a cross-ice feed from Scott Gomez, but Rob Voltera tied the game two minutes later with his fifth goal of the season against Alaska. Joe Talbot responded with his fourth goal of the series (three of which were set up by Daniels), but Nate Forster pulled the Salmon Kings even with less than 90 seconds to play in the first period, and the teams headed into the dressing room tied 2-2.

Daniels scored off his own rebound 5:35 into the second period, giving the Aces a 3-2 edge they would never relinquish. After holding Victoria to only four shots in the middle frame, Alaska seized complete control in the third, scoring a pair of goals 68 seconds apart on one-timers from Charles Linglet and rookie Vladimir Novak, who has scored all three of his goals this season against the Salmon Kings. Goaltender Lance Mayes recorded 14 of his 26 saves in the final period to run his record against his hometown club to 5-1. The Aces have won five straight on the road, all against Victoria, while the Salmon Kings matched the longest winless streak in ECHL history at 16 games (0-15-1). Gomez finished with three assists, padding his league-leading total to 41, ten more than Greenville's Carl Mallette, who ranks second in that category.

Alaska (22-13-4) has taken over sole possession of third place in the West Division heading into next weekend's three-game series against Idaho at Sullivan Arena. Friday and Saturday night's games with the Steelheads start at 7:15 p.m., while Sunday's series finale will begin at 5:05 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live on flagship station KFQD 750 AM and be made available for only six dollars per game at www.alaskaaces.com, courtesy of B2 Networks. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
