Gulls hit All-Star break on high note
January 24, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO ââ The San Diego Gulls hit the all-star break red hot, having won six of their last seven games. Unfortunately, most of the other teams in the division remain just as hot, making it a bit tougher for San Diego to move up the standings.
Even after their six-game winning streak, the Gulls have lost ground in the division, now sitting in a fourth-place tie with the Fresno Falcons (as of Monday). The good news, however, is that San Diego has played the fewest games in the division. As of Monday, the Gulls have at least two games in hand on every team in the West and have also played one less game than Fresno.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
Jan. 19 vs. Las Vegas: Mark Pederson scored once and added two assists, leading the red-hot Gulls to a 4-2 victory over the Wranglers, the club's fifth straight overall. Pederson notched assists on San Diego's first two goals and then sealed the game with a breakaway tally in the third period. Sylvain Deschatelets (1g, 1a) and Mike Garrow (2a) had multipoint games for San Diego as well. The Gulls grabbed a 1-0 lead late in the first period, before Las Vegas tied it early in the second. San Diego took a 2-1 lead moments later, but the Wranglers again scored the equalizer. Andrew Canzanello put the Blue and Orange up for good five minutes into the third period before Pederson put the nail in the coffin.
Jan. 21 vs. Las Vegas: The Wranglers held a 3-2 lead midway through the third period, but got into huge penalty trouble and the Gulls capitalized, skating away with a 5-3 win. Las Vegas grabbed a quick 2-0 lead, netting back-to-back goals in the game's first 3:26. San Diego answered with two straight power-play goals later in the first, knotting the game at 2-2. But the Wranglers regained their lead late in the second period, a lead they would retain until the team self-destructed in the third. The Gulls scored three straight goals â all on two-man advantages â and cruised the rest of the way. All five of San Diego's goals were scored on the power play. The team record for most power-play goals in a game is six.
Jan. 22 vs. Pensacola: San Diego carried a 2-1 lead into the third period, but Pensacola scored three straight in the final frame to skate away 4-3 winners. The Gulls opened a 2-0 cushion midway through the second period, thanks to goals by Curtis Brown and Brian Gornick tickled the twine. The Ice Pilots then propelled ahead with four unanswered goals, three of which game in the third period.
PLAYER NOTES: Deschatelets is in the midst of an eight-game point streak (4g, 10a). He now leads the club with 29 points overall... Gornick has 18 points in his last 17 games (12g, 6a)... Brown has 14 points (4g, 10a) in his last 10 games... Andrew Canzanello was re-called by the American Hockey League's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks... Mathieu Chouinard (groin), Max Birbraer (shoulder) and Wes Rypien (knee) were placed on injured reserve... Jonathon Shockey, who's missed the last month with a separated shoulder, should be activated Friday... Sean Murphy remains on the injured list with a broken thumb...
TEAM NOTES: The Gulls outscored their opponents 25-15 during their season-high six-game win streak, which was snapped Saturday... They are 14-4-2 at home and 7-8-2 on the road... San Diego is 2-2-0 against teams outside of its division; with nine games remaining against non-West Division teams this season... The Gulls, who have scored 13 power-play goals in their last seven games, now rank third in the ECHL with the man advantage...
UPCOMING GAMES: The 2005 Coors Light ECHL All-Star Game, which takes place Wednesday in Reading, Pa., will be televised live on Ch. 4 San Diego, starting at 4 p.m. (PST). After the All-Star break, the Gulls will embark on a seven-game eastern road trip, which starts Friday in Peoria, Ill. at 5:30 p.m. (PST).
