Fort Wayne Komets News Release
Fort Wayne, IN --- One road game is all that remains of a 10-game tour leading up to the Komet's home opener this Saturday. The Komets traveled to Elmira Friday and were doubled up 6-3 as the Jackals evened the season series 1-1. Saturday the Komets shutout the Generals at Flint 3-0 to escape the weekend with 2 points and remain in 4th place in the Eastern Conference after 9 games played.
Friday in Elmira Dustin Virag and Bobby Stewart each scored a goal and added an assist while Colin Chaulk picked up helpers on all 3 Komet goals. Jake Ortmeyer netted the Komet's 3rd goal on the power play, his first goal of the season. Scott Rideout took his 2nd loss of the season stopping 10 of 14 shots and Tom Lawson allowed 1 goal on 9 shots in 21 minutes of relief.
Saturday the Komets traveled to Flint where they earned their first shutout of the season 3-0 over the host Generals. Virag, Michel Massie and Marc Barlow each scored for the Komets while Lawson earned his first career shutout stopping all 23 Flint shots. The Komets outshot the Generals 39-23 to extend their streak of outshooting opponents to 7 games (277-176).
This week the Komets will travel to Kalamazoo Friday to face the Wings at 7:30pm before returning home to host the Quad City Mallards Saturday at 7:35pm. A record sell-out crowd of approximately 10,000 fans will witness the Komet's 2002-03 UHL season home opener, the first event to be held in the newly renovated Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. Pre-game festivities will include a ribbon cutting ceremony by Allen County officials, signifying the beginning of a new era for the coliseum arena.
