July 29, 2016 - BASEBALL Carolina League: The city of Fayetteville (NC) announced it will move forward on a memorandum of understanding with Major League Baseball's Houston Astros to build a new downtown ballpark for a possible team in the high Class-A Carolina League. The league's Myrtle Beach Pelicans team was renamed the Myrtle Beach Mermen for one game this week. The Myrtle Beach Mermen is the name of a fictional team in an HBO series called Eastbound and Down. Lake Monsters and Athletics Extend Player Development Contract

July 29, 2016 - BURLINGTON, VT -- The Vermont Lake Monsters and Oakland Athletics are proud to announce that the two teams have extended their Player Development Contract for the next two seasons through the year 2018, the New York-Penn and American League teams jointly announced today. July 29, 2016 - FRISCO, TEXAS - Behind a four-run fourth inning, the Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, knocked off the visiting San Antonio Missions 4-3 Thursday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark. Trailing 2-0 entering the fourth inning, the RoughRiders got to starter Dinelson Lamet (3-5). The Riders scored their first run on an RBI single from Ronald Guzman. Schlichtholz Flirts with No-Hitter

July 28, 2016 - PALMER, Alaska - Anchorage Glacier Pilots pitcher Fred Schlichtholz struggled in his first seven appearances this summer in the Alaska Baseball League, surrendering 18 runs and producing a 7.96 ERA.
