Winterhawks Weekly: Shifting to Saskatchewan

January 10, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Winterhawks kicked off their eastern swing in Manitoba last week, playing in front of friends and family in the province for the first time since early 2019. After a pair of tough defeats, the team looks ahead to more friendly faces in Saskatchewan during a stretch of four games in five nights to wrap up the road trip.

Off the ice, the Winterhawks got a massive boost on Monday as the Winnipeg Jets assigned 2021 first-rounder Chaz Lucius to Portland for the remainder of the season. The 19-year-old native of White Bear Lake, Minn. has tallied five points in 12 games with the AHL's Manitoba Moose this season and is coming off of a trip to the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship with Team USA, where he tallied seven points in seven games - including a hat-trick and overtime winner in the bronze medal game.

Hot Hawks:

Forward Dawson Pasternak picked up two primary assists in Sunday's game against Winnipeg, and has found the scoresheet in three of his last four outings (1G, 3A).

Forward Gabe Klassen led Winterhawks skaters during the first two games of the eastern swing, notching one assist in Brandon and two more in Winnipeg. The Hawks' captain has points in three straight games (1G, 3A).

Forward Nick Johnson picked up goals in both games against Everett, finishing off Diego Buttazzoni feeds for his second and third goals of the season to mark his first career point streak.

Goaltenders Dante Giannuzzi and Jan Špunar came up big in each win last week. Giannuzzi backstopped Wednesday and Saturday's victories, stopping 66 of 71 total shots to push his win streak to five games. Similarly, Špunar stopped 31 of 32 shots on the road on Friday for his fourth win in a row, allowing two goals or fewer in each of those games.

Weekly Rewind:

Portland 4 at Brandon 3 (Friday):

Down by three in the third period, the Winterhawks clawed back to within a goal but fell just short as the Brandon Wheat Kings took a 3-2 victory at Westoba Place on Friday.

Portland 3 at Winnipeg 6 (Sunday):

Four-point nights from Zach Benson and Matthew Savoie carried the Winnipeg ICE past the Winterhawks by a 6-3 final on Sunday at Wayne Fleming Arena.

The Week Ahead:

The road swing continues in Saskatchewan!

First up, the Hawks battle the Prince Albert Raiders on Tuesday, then face the Saskatoon Blades in a quick turnaround to Sasktel Center on Wednesday.
