The Story:

Gabe Klassen earned first-star honors with a goal and two assists in his hometown as the Winterhawks (27-6-2-1) knocked off the Prince Albert Raiders (14-22-3-0) by a 5-3 final on Tuesday night. Jan Špunar stopped 21 of 24 shots in the victory.

Following a scoreless first stanza, Josh Zakreski opened the scoring as he rifled a loose puck top shelf from the left slot just 17 seconds into the second period. Five minutes later, Klassen grabbed a power-play goal on his home ice following a silky no-look feed from James Stefan. The hosts refused to go quietly, though, and soon tied the game up with two goals in just over two minutes from Ryder Ritchie and Cole Peardon to set up a 2-2 third period.

Portland broke the tie once more on Kyle Chyzowski's 10th of the year, a shorthanded strike on a 2-on-1 with Marcus Nguyen at 4:15 of the third period, but the Raiders again knotted it up as Carter Anderson made it 3-3 at 11:16. As the third wound down, both teams traded chances, and the Hawks finally broke through for good as Robbie Fromm-Delorme put a quick wrister over the shoulder of Tikhon Chaika off of a Klassen faceoff win 1t 17:58. Prince Albert pushed for the equalizer, but Stefan iced the game with an empty-netter with two seconds to play.

Portland now gears up to finish off a back-to-back set with a battle in Saskatoon against the Blades on Wednesday night. Puck drop is set for 5:00 PM (PT) at Sasktel Centre.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:

"We grew up watching (the Raiders), and to come home and play against them - it's an emotional game. Everyone knows we're from here, so it's just a great feeling to get a win in our home barn, even when it's not really our home barn."

Winterhawks defenseman Rhett Ravndahl
