Toledo Walleye News Release

Toledo, OH - The Walleye looked to ride the momentum at Lucas County Arena after winning four of its last five on the home ice. Toledo was forced to play catch-up right from the start on Friday, however, after an odd-man rush got the Devils going offensively.

Trenton came out firing early in the first with two quick goals. Brett Wilson led the charge at 2:14 in the first and fired a shot at goaltender Thomas McCollum, which was blocked. As he slid to make the stop, however, the rebound trickled away to an open Matt Vokes, who shot away from the drifting goalie for the game's first goal. Then 34 seconds later, Trenton added a power play tally when a shot by Slavomir Tomko got through McCollum.

The visitors would take a 3-0 advantage after a spin-around move by Jack Combs made him wide open in front of the net. He took a shot that went through the legs of McCollum at 8:34, subsequently chasing him from the game.

Toledo would then strike twice behind goaltender Alec Richards, who took over for the remainder of the contest. Short-handed, a loose puck between the benches was poked ahead by Bryan Ewing, who gathered the puck in a foot race and, just getting enough space to take the shot, got the step needed and fired a hard wrist shot over the shoulder of Devils' netminder Gerald Coleman.

Later in the first, JC Sawyer took a slap-shot on the power play. As the shot approached the net, Evan Rankin deflected the puck around Coleman for his 13th goal of the season, cutting the deficit to one. The Devils, however, would take a 4-2 lead to the first break after a Trevor Kell goal with under a minute left.

The second period was much more uneventful, although the Walleye were able to cut the deficit to one score. Sebastien Piche took a pass from Mike Hedden and scored on a power play to set the tone for an exciting finish.

The Walleye took control of the momentum in front of a roaring Lucas County Arena. In the third, Piche sent a pass ahead to Derek Nesbitt, who threw a perfect wrister over the shoulder of Coleman for the equalizer at 6:44. Toledo took the lead when Evan Rankin scored his second of the contest to put the crowd into a frenzy at 7:51. Trenton would tie the game late in the third and sent the contest into overtime.

Toledo started the overtime on the power play, where Mark Nebus took advantage for the game-winner. Richards made 19 saves in the winning "relief" effort.
