Jackals defense steps up in victory over Everblades

January 8, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals held the Florida Everblades to 24 shots on goal in a 3-1 victory at First Arena on Friday night in front of 3,361 fans. Jackals goaltender Julien Ellis stopped all 12 shots that he saw in the final two periods as the Jackals earned a comeback victory at home.

The Everblades took an early 1-0 lead, when A.J. Thelen, coming out of the penalty box, took a feed from Ross Carlson at the Elmira blue line and skated in on Jackals starting goaltender Andy Chiodo and beat him stick side to give Florida the advantage. Chiodo stopped the other 11 shots he saw in the first period but was pulled before the second session.

Yannick Tifu, who last season scored three points for the Everblades against the Jackals at First Arena in the only other meeting between the two teams, started the scoring for the Jackals early in the second period. Tifu intercepted a pass at the Florida blue line, fed Jarrett Konkle on the left wing who sent the puck back to Tifu in the slot, and Tifu one-timed it past Everblades goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu to tie the game at 1:09.

The Jackals used a beneficial bounce to take the lead 13:00 into the second period. With the Jackals on a three-on-two rush, Olivier Proulx fired a shot from the right circle that Beckford-Tseu stopped with his blocker, but the puck deflected off of an Everblade into the net to make it 2-1 in favor of Elmira. Mat Robinson and Mike Sgroi collected assists on the play.

Florida's offense struggled to get anything going once they trailed in the game. The Everblades, who averaged 35.34 shots on goal per game heading into the contest, could muster only 12 in the final two periods. With Beckford-Tseu pulled for the extra attacker late in the game and the Jackals on the power play, Tifu knocked in an empty-netter to seal the game 3-1 at 19:33 of the third period.

The win marked the first time this season that the Jackals won a regulation game while scoring under four goals.

Julien Ellis improved to 3-2-0-0 with the Jackals this season with his 12-for-12 effort, while Beckford-Tseu fell to 4-2-0-1.

Elmira improved to 16-15-2-2 with the victory, while Florida fell to 17-14-2-3 in 2009-2010.

The Jackals are back in action tomorrow night against the Everblades at First Arena at 7:35 p.m. The First Arena Box Office opens at 10:00 a.m., and fans can also purchase tickets by calling (607) 734-(PUCK) or by logging onto Ticketmaster.com.
