Nailers battle past Cyclones 4-2

Wheeling, WV - The Nailers got an exciting victory over the Cincinnati Cyclones 4-2 in a hard fought effort that ended the Cyclones' 4 game winning streak. Goalie Brad Thiessen got the win with 17 saves on 19 shots and is 4-0-0 in his last 4 games. Wheeling improved to 18-16-2 with the victory and is at 2 games over .500 for the second time this season.

The Nailers held Cincinnati to only 19 shots on goal in a solid combined effort even though the Cyclones had 8 power plays.

Jordan Fox tipped Thomas Beauregard's shot in past Jeremy Smith for a power play goal, his 10th of the season to give the Nailers an early 1-0 lead 9:10 in the first.

T.J. Fox gave the Nailers a 2-0 lead on a shorthanded breakaway goal from a long pass by Brad Thiessen at 15:21 in the first. T.J. Fox has 8 goals in his last 7 games and increased his season total to 13 goals on the season.

Casey Pierro-Zabotel centered for Jon D'Aversa who shot a wrister past Smith in his first game back with the Nailers that put Wheeling up 3-0 at 3:39 in the second. D'Aversa was assigned to Wheeling from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. D'Aversa scored two goals for the American Conference in the ECHL All-Star game a couple years ago. He also played in 3 games with the Nailers last year while spending the bulk of the season in the AHL. He had played in 14 games with WBS this year recording one assist.

Almost a minute later Brett Robinson slipped one past Brad Thiessen to get the Cyclones back in the game at 3-1.

Scott Reynolds' hopping puck found its way past Thiessen on the Cyclones power play to bring Cincinnati within a goal as they trailed 3-2 early in the third.

Lacroix was escorted off the ice after he got a 5:00 charging the goalie penalty and a game misconduct after he blasted Nailers goalie Thiessen at 8:35 in the third.

Thomas Beauregard built onto the Nailers lead on the power play that followed with a sharp angled goal on a 5 on 3 power play for his 19th of the season from Jordan Fox and Mitch Ganzak that gave the Nailers a 4-2 lead at 10:57 in the 3rd.

Ryan Schnell of Wheeling and Hans Benson of Cincinnati dropped the gloves in the 1st period in an entertaining bout that got the fans and both teams ignited.

Many of the fans in attendance took advantage of the Nailers Blizzard Promotional Special. Four inches of snow were dumped on the Ohio Valley overnight so the Nailers discounted tickets for tonight's game only by $4. And those fans who took advantage of the special were treated to a good one.

Wheeling outshot the Cyclones 28-19. Wheeling was 2-for-5 on the power play while the Cyclones went 1-for-8 and also allowed a Nailers shorthanded goal.

The Nailers improve to 18-16-2 and the Cyclones fall to 21-12-1.The next match up between the Nailers and the Cyclones is next Tuesday in Cincinnati. The Nailers are 2-4-0 against the Cyclones this season.

The Nailers are beginning a stretch of 5 out of 6 at home giving them a chance to rack up some wins.

Wheeling hosts the Johnstown Chiefs Saturday night at WesBanco Arena at 7:35. The first 1,000 kids in attendance receive a Nailers backpack courtesy of BB&T. It's also Girl Scout Night at the game. The Nailers travel to Cincinnati on Tuesday. Next weekend the Nailers host three games at WesBanco Arena,
