Gladiators Fall to Stingrays 4-3

Pat Galivan extended his goal-scoring streak to four games but the Gladiators couldn't hold a 3-2 third period lead in a 4-3 loss to the South Carolina Stingrays at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Friday night. Gwinnett falls to 15-13-2-2 on the season as the Gladiators endure their longest home winless streak of the season.

Gwinnett took a 1-0 lead just 3:41 into the first period on Adam Berti's eighth goal of the season. Berti collected a pass in the slot from Scott Mifsud and deposited the the puck past Stingrays netminder Shane Connelly for the marker. Pat Galivan also had an assist on the goal for Gwinnett.

The Gladiators pushed their lead to 2-0 on the power play midway through the first period. Matt Francis found a bouncing puck on the back door along the goal line and beat Connelly for the goal. Miller picked up an assist on the Gladiators second goal and Jason Lawrence had a helper as well.

South Carolina struck back in the second period with a pair of goals to tie the game at two. Spencer Carbery cut the Gladiators lead in half at 7:41 of the second period on the power play. Carbery got the marker by beating Gwinentt netminder David Brown on a deflection. Dylan Yeo and Michael Dubuc collected the assists on the goal for the Stingrays.

With just 32 seconds left in the second period, South Carolina was able equalize the contest at two goals apiece on Jack Hauswirth's 5th marker of the season. With Hauswirth open in the high slot, Carbery was able to find the forward through traffic to set up the tally. Trevor Bruess also had an assist on the play for the Stingrays.

Gwinnett stormed out to take a 3-2 lead on the Stingrays just 1:48 into the third period. Galivan notched his 17th goal of the season ripping a slapshot from the right wing circle past Connelly unassisted. Galivan worked down the right wing wall after picking up a loose puck just inside the Gwinnett blue line to set up the marker.

The Gladiators lead lasted just 48 seconds before South Carolina notched a pair of goals just 12 seconds apart. Trent Campbell tied the game at three with the first of the Stingray's two goals. Keith Johnson notched an assist on the marker.

Yeo then posted the game winner for the Stingrays ripping a slapshot past Brown at 2:48 of the third period. Grant Farrell and Jake Hauswirth had the assists on the goal.

Both teams went 1-for-6 on the power play while the Stingrays outshot the Gladiators by a 28-25 margin.

The Gladiators continue their 7th season in the ECHL on Saturday, January 9th vs. South Carolina at 7:05 p.m. The Gladiators are the AA affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers and Columbus Blue Jackets and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
