BOISE, Idaho - As the Steelheads gear up for a busy holiday homestand they remain tops in the West Coast Hockey League with their record of 15-4-3, 33 points. In 22 games played, they are 4 points ahead of where they were last year, marking their second best start in franchise history (2000-01 they were 2 points ahead).
The Steelheads are leading the league with their power play having scored 33 goals in 131 opportunities (25. 2%), and have the best penalty kill allowing only 15 in 129 chances (88.4%).
Jason Cugnet (8-3-1) is leading all goaltenders in goals against average at 1.84; Scott Swanson leads the league in assists with 22 and all defensemen in points with 24; and Joe Rybar is tied for the league lead in the plus/minus category at +12.
Transactions: Last week's activities:
* 12/02/02 - Waived Forward Wes Dorey (effective 12/01/02).
* 12/06/02 - Activated Forward Jeff Shevalier from 14-Day I.R.
Placed Forward Derek Paget on the 14-Day I.R.
Practice Schedule: The Steelheads will practice Wednesday and Thursday of this week from 10:00 a.m. - Noon. They will skate on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. All practices are open to the media and public.
Of note: The Steelheads will welcome their One Millionth Fan next week at either the December 16th or 18th game. The lucky fan will win a plethora of prizes including season tickets for the 2003-04 season, a personalized "1,000,000th Fan" jersey, roundtrip airfare with hotel and game tickets to see the Steelheads in San Diego, and much more (more information will follow).
In the Community: The Steelheads will be helping community organizations over the holidays. Activities planned for the week ahead are:
* Thursday, Dec. 12th - After practice skate with St. Luke's Children's Hospital patients. (The Steelheads will auction off gameworn jerseys on Dec. 16th, 18th and 20th, designed by a St. Luke's patient, to raise money for the hospital.)
* Thursday, Dec. 12th - Steelheads players will be ringing the red kettles to help raise money for the Salvation Army at the Boise Towne Square from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
* Friday, Dec. 13th - The Steelheads are selling Christmas stockings with 10% of all sales going to benefit the United Way of Treasure Valley's children's programs.
* Saturday, Dec. 14th - Sixty underprivileged children, arranged through the Caldwell Cub Scouts, will watch the Steelheads practice and visit with the players afterward for autographs.
Up Next: The Long Beach Ice Dogs make their first appearance on Bank of America ice this season in a three-game series: Friday, December 13th, Saturday, December 14th, and Monday, December 16th. Steelheads are 2-0-2 against the Dogs this year.
