San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - If the West Coast Hockey League playoffs started today, the San Diego Gulls would be sitting at home. Believe it or not, the Blue and Orange begin the week two games under .500 for the first time in history. Even more shocking, San Diego sits in fifth place, one point out of a playoff spot.
The Gulls (8-10-1) begin the week with 17 points, one point behind the fourth-place Fresno Falcons... After beginning the season with three straight wins, San Diego has won 5 of its last 16 (and only three in regulation)... The Go-to guys, Mark Pederson and R.J. Enga each have one goal in his last nine games. They've combined for seven points during that span... The Gulls have registered 193 shots in their last six games (more than 32 per contest), but have only scored eight times.... The Blue and Orange play 12 of its next 17 games on home ice.
TRANSACTIONS:
Defenseman Kevin Grant signed Monday... Jamie Black is still on injured reserve, but expected to be activated for Friday's game... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera remain with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears...
COMMUNITY UPDATE: Saturday: The organization held its all-new "Holiday Skate With The Gulls" at the Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center. Fans of all ages had their opportunity to skate and mingle with their favorite Gulls players. Steve Martinson also made a special appearance as Santa Claus.
Saturday: The Gulls' mascot, former captain B.J. MacPherson and Vice President Jeff Longo were the marshals at the 23rd annual Ocean Beach Holiday Parade. The evening parade featured a tree-lighting ceremony and a surprise fireworks display.
Tuesday: Six Gulls players will participate in the Junior Seau Foundation's eighth annual "Shop With A Jock." The event will allow approximately 200 underprivileged children the opportunity to shop for gifts for their loved ones. Each child will shop with an athlete from the Chargers, Gulls, Padres or local college athletic team. For more information on "Shop With A Jock," please call the Junior Seau Foundation at 858-244-7328 ext 102.
Wednesday: MacPherson is scheduled to speak to the Old Pros of Scripps Ranch about the team and hockey in general.
Thursday: The Gulls and the North Bay Association are teaming up for the second annual "Help Just One" event, which helps local, at-risk, needy children. Some 75 children will be participating this year and each will receive pre-requested gifts, a holiday feast, a surprise from SeaWorld and a special visit from Santa Claus. Children and their families will also have the opportunity to skate on the ice.
Dec. 16: Players and staff will participate in the second annual "Pucks and Pasta" dinner, held at the Hard Rock Café in downtown. Fans will have their opportunity to wine and dine with the players and get their hands on autographed memorabilia. There will be an auction and raffle for these items, which will go to benefit the Ronald McDonald House.
LAST WEEK:
