Falcons Shutout Ice Dogs

December 9, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release

Fresh off a 10-day sabbatical from game action, the Taylor Cup Champion Fresno Falcons defeated the Long Beach Ice Dogs this past Saturday, 1-0. The game was the team's second straight shutout at home after they blanked the San Diego Gulls, 2-0, on Nov. 19.

Although Fresno's fifth-ranked offense is still struggling to score goals, Scott Borders' tally with just over two minutes remaining in the second period was enough to deliver a Falcons victory behind 30 saves by goaltender Terry Friesen.

The win gets Fresno back to .500 at 8-8-2 and 18 points. They have sole possession of fourth place in the WCHL, four points behind the Ice Dogs.

FRIESEN TIES FRANCHISE MARK

Saturday's effort by Friesen was his first shutout of the season and his fourth in a Fresno sweater, tying him with former Falcons goaltender Jeff Ferguson as the franchise's all-time leader. Although Friesen played 47 minutes of the club's earlier shutout against the Gulls, neither he nor back-up Mark Gowan received credit for an official shutout. Friesen already owns the team record for most shutouts in a season with three during the 2000-01 campaign.

STREAKS AT STAKE THIS WEEKEND

The Falcons travel to Bakersfield this coming Friday and then on to San Diego on Saturday with two separate streaks – one bad, one good – at stake. On Friday night they will try to end a six-game winless streak against the Condors against whom they are 0-5-1 this season. Conversely, on Saturday, Fresno will try to keep a four-game unbeaten streak intact against the Gulls. Both games can be heard live on 103.1 FM, The Mountain Cat, beginning each evening at 6:50 p.m. with the Mail Boxes, Etc. Pre-game Show.

SKATE WITH THE FALCONS TONIGHT, TEDDY BEAR DELIVERY ON WEDNESDAY

The entire Falcons team will be at Gateway Ice Center tonight for the club's annual "Skate with the Falcons." The admission free event runs from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Skate rental is free for season ticket holders and $2.75 for non-season ticket holders.

Several Falcons players will spread holiday cheer on Wednesday from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. when they help deliver the stuffed animals collected from Saturday's Third Annual Teddy Bear Toss to children at University Medical Center.

PRACTICE SCHEDULE

The Falcons will practice at Gateway Ice Center tomorrow at 12 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday's practice times are at 10 a.m. both days at Gateway. The team is tentatively scheduled to hold Friday's pre-game skate in Bakersfield in advance of that evening's game.
