Bombers Go 1-2-1 to Start Road Trip

December 9, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release

The Dayton Bombers Professional Hockey Team (9-14-3) began their longest road stretch of the season with a 1-2-1 mark, splitting a pair of games at Atlantic City, losing by a goal in Johnstown, then earning a point in a shootout loss at Lexington. The Bombers will spend some time in the Dayton area practicing before visiting Wheeling and Trenton on Friday and Saturday of this week, respectively.

Below is a review of this past week's "4-in-5" stretch:

12/4/02- BOMBERS 1 @ Atlantic City 5

Kevin Colley, Scott Matzka, and Shawn Maltby each had a goal and an assist as the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies topped the Dayton Bombers 5-1 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Boardwalk Bullies opened a 3-0 first period lead on even strength goals by Maltby and Ryan Mougenel in addition to a power play goal by Kevin Colley. Andrew Ianiero cut the Bombers' deficit to 3-1 with thirty seconds left in the first period after Ryan Vince had hit the post. For the rookie Ianiero, the goal was his third in two games and his eighth of the season. But the Boardwalk Bullies added some insurance in the second period on a goal by Jerry Galway at 9:30 and a power play marker at 12:52 of the third period by Matzka. Jade Galbraith finished with three assists for Atlantic City. The Boardwalk Bullies had ten power play opportunities, compared to just two for the Dayton Bombers.

12/6/02 - BOMBERS 4 @ Atlantic City 1

Ryan Vince scored two third period goals as the Dayton Bombers responded against Atlantic City in a rematch. Vince's first goal came on a power play rebound chance at 5:36 after defenseman Jason Crain's shot was stopped by goaltender Scott Stirling. Vince scored again following an Atlantic City turnover at 8:15 on a turnaround slap shot from the far circle. The Bombers, who killed off all nine Atlantic City power plays, converted with the man advantage in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Tom Nemeth received a cross-ice pass from Chris M. Thompson and fired a shot past Stirling at 8:02. Matt Poapst made it 2-0 at 18:03 of the first when he deflected Mike Vellinga's point shot into the net. Rookie Shane Bendera, making the start with Andrew Allen on recall to AHL Grand Rapids, stopped 23 shots in the win, including 12 in the first period. Jim Henkel scored in the second period for Atlantic City.

12/7/02 - BOMBERS 3 @ Johnstown 4

A three-goal second period by Johnstown vaulted it to a win over the Bombers at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. After Torrey DiRoberto's power play marker at 5:30 of the first period, Jeff Sullivan responded with a score from the near circle after receiving a pass from Mike Varhaug. Vladimir Nemec's close-in shot at 4:42 of the second period, followed by Dominic Forget's short-handed tally at 14:00 helped Johnstown to a 3-1 lead, but Ben Knopp converted on a Ryan Vince centering pass for a power play goal just one minute later. J.F. Boutin helped the Chiefs regain their two-goal lead at 17:38, however, when he stuffed a rebound across the goal line past rookie goalie Shane Bendera. DiRoberto's spectacular individual effort goal on a backhand at 4:20 of the third got the Bombers to within one once again, but the Chiefs held off a late Bombers' charge in the waning minutes to protect the win.

12/8/02 - BOMBERS 3 @ Lexington 4 (SO)

The Bombers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead late in the third period of this hockey game, but Fraser Clair tallied a power play goal for the Men O'War with just 1:16 remaining in regulation to force the game to extend. After a scoreless overtime, the Men O'War produced two goals in the shootout to the Bombers one, thereby cementing the 4-3 victory. Though the Bombers surrendered an even strength goal to Mike Sgroi (7:50) and a power play goal to Van Burgess (18:30) in the second period, they manufactured a comeback, initiated by rookie Ben Knopp's second goal in as many games with thirty seconds remaining in the middle period. Fred Slukynsky tied the score with a backhander from just in front of the goal crease at 13:24 of the third, then created a distraction with a defender in front of Lexington netminder Mike Smith on rookie Jason Crain's power play, slap shot goal just 1:57 later.

BOMBER BITES: Rookie defenseman Jason Crain continued his man-advantage production with three power play points in four games this past week (1-2-3).
