Cyclones Win Five Games In A Row

December 9, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release

Cincinnati was 3-0 last week and extended its winning streak to five games and its home winning streak to seven games while moving from fourth to third in the Northwest Division, one point behind second place Peoria. The Cyclones play at Roanoke on Friday and at Atlantic City on Sunday. Cincinnati was 2-1-0 against Atlantic City in 2001-02 and 3-3-0 against Roanoke.

The Cyclones outscored their opponents 22-3 last week, raising their scoring average from 3.53 goals per game to 4.05 goals per game while lowering their goals allowed from 2.89 goals per game to 2.64 goals per game. Cincinnati moved from seventh to first in scoring and climbed from seventh to second in goals allowed. The Cyclones went 5-for-15 on the power play and a perfect 12-for-12 on the penalty kill, raising its power-play percentage to 23.25 and its penalty-killing percentage to 86.40. Cincinnati moved from seventh to third in power-play percentage and from fourth to third in penalty killing.

The five-game winning streak is the longest active winning streak in the ECHL. The longest winning streak in the ECHL in 2002-03 is six games by South Carolina (October 11-November 1), Toledo (Nov. 1-15) and Richmond (November 9-23). The seven-game home winning streak is the longest active home winning streak in the ECHL and the second longest home winning streak overall. The longest home winning streak in the ECHL in 2002-03 is 11 games by Toledo (October 1-November 15).

The Cyclones set a couple of ECHL season highs in their 8-0 win over Wheeling on Saturday. The eight-goal winning margin is the largest in the ECHL in 2002-03 and Cincinnati's six goals in the second period ties the ECHL high for second-period goals set by Baton Rouge on October 11 and tied by Richmond on November 22.

After not having a player score a hat trick since returning to Cincinnati in 2001-02, the Cyclones had two hat tricks in three games last week. Joe Cardarelli had three goals in Wednesday's 8-2 win over Johnstown and Matt Noga had his first career hat trick in Saturday's 8-0 win over Wheeling. Cardarelli has seven goals in his last three games and 10 goals in 10 games for Cincinnati, ranking him second on the team behind Noga, who has a team-leading 11 goals in 22 games. In his last five games, Noga has scored 11 points (6g-5a) giving him 27 points, second on the team behind Ryan Gaucher, who has 28 points (6g-22a). Gaucher has 12 points (2g-10a) in his last five games and ranks second among ECHL defensemen in assists and scoring. During the winning streak, Mark Kielkucki is 3-0 with a 0.86 goals against average while Greg Hewitt is 2-0 with a shutout and a 2.63 goals against average.

Baton Rouge's Richardson On Five-Game Goal-Scoring Streak

Baton Rouge's Bryan Richardson has the longest active goal-scoring streak in the East Coast Hockey League at five games. The streak began November 29 at Arkansas and he has scored five goals in the five games. Richardson's streak ties him with Louisiana's Shawn McNeil (eight goals from October 18-27) and Columbus' J.J. Hunter (five goals from October 11-25) for the ECHL's second-longest goal scoring streak in 2002-03. Reading's Brian McCullough has the longest goal-scoring streak in 2002-03, scoring a goal in six consecutive games (six goals) from November 2-17. Richardson leads Baton Rouge in goals (11), power-play goals (6), shorthand goals (2) and points (20).

Atlantic City's Scott Stirling picked up his second shutout of the season on Saturday, making 26 saves in a 3-0 win over Roanoke. Reading rookie Jeff Sanger picked up his first professional shutout, making 32 saves in a 6-0 win over Richmond on Saturday. Cincinnati's Greg Hewitt also picked up his first professional shutout, making 27 saves in an 8-0 win over Wheeling on Saturday. Richmond's Dan Lombard made 27 saves and recorded his first professional shutout in a 3-0 win over Johnstown on Sunday. There have been 27 shutouts in 326 ECHL games.

Generals' Ftorek Has Record Night

Sam Ftorek scored four goals and five points in Greensboro's 6-3 win at Reading on Tuesday, tying the Generals team records for most goals (Curtis Huppe, Jan. 20, 2001 vs. Richmond) and points in a game (three players). Ftorek leads the East Coast Hockey League with 11 power-play goals and leads the Generals with 15 goals and 23 points. He becomes the third ECHL player to score four goals in 2002-03, joining Columbia's Justin Morrison (October 24 against Augusta) and Louisiana's Bruce Richardson (November 23 against Columbus), and is the ninth ECHL player to score five points in a game in 2002-03.
