Storm Tracks

January 6, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Toledo Walleye News Release

The Storm's 23-7-3 record gives Toledo 49 points, which places the Storm in fifth place in the overall ECHL point standings behind the Atlantic City (53), the Louisiana (52), the Greensboro (50), and the Mississippi (50). However, the Storm has only played 33 games, and each of the teams ahead of Toledo have played more: Atlantic City (38), Louisiana (38), Greensboro (36), and Mississippi (39).

Toledo's .742 win percentage is the best in the league.

Toledo's 4-3 win at US Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio last Tuesday was the seventh consecutive win for the Storm. That established a season high win streak for Toledo and tied the longest win streak for the season in the ECHL. (The Florida Everblades also had a streak of seven straight wins earlier in the season.) The Storm's win streak was snapped with the 3-2 loss in Peoria on Friday night.

The win in Cincinnati last Tuesday was the fourth consecutive road win for the Storm, establishing a season high in that category, as well. Of course, that streak was also ended with the loss in Peoria on Friday.

The Storm had won four consecutive home games until the 4-3 shootout loss to Cincinnati on Sunday. The 2002-03 Storm established a franchise record by winning the first eleven games that the team played at the Toledo Sports Arena this season.

The Storm scored the first goal in the 4-3 win in Cincinnati on December 31. That marked the 20th time this season that Toledo had scored the game's first goal, and the Storm had a record of 19-0-1 in those games. The Storm also scored first in the 3-2 loss to Peoria on Friday. This marked the first time all season that Toledo scored the game's first goal and lost in regulation. The Storm also scored the game's first goal in the 4-3 shootout loss to Cincinnati on Saturday. Toledo is currently 19-1-2 when scoring first.

Matt Ellis scored the first goal of the game 59 seconds into the contest against Cincinnati last Tuesday. Ellis also scored the game's first goal 1:48 into Saturday's game against Cincinnati. For Ellis, those were the first "first goals" that he has scored in his professional career.

In Tuesday's 4-3 win over Cincinnati, Matt Ellis also assisted on two other goals, including the game winner by Tim Verbeek (at 18:54 of the second period). That marked the first time in his professional career that Ellis has picked up three points in a game (although he did pick up four points: 2g-2a on November 8th in a 5-2 win over Peoria); and his fourth multi-point performance of the season.

The Storm's second goal in the 4-3 win over the Cyclones on Tuesday was scored by Jeff Johnstone 48 seconds into the second period. That extended Johstone's personal point streak to seven games. In those games, Johnstone scored 4 goals and picked up 7 assists (11 points). That streak was snapped in Friday's 3-2 loss to Peoria. Johstone was Toledo's leading scorer in the month of December, racking up 4 goals and 9 assists and playing at a (+9).

Darryl Bootland scored Toledo's third goal in the 4-3 win in Cincinnati. That goal was scored while the Storm was on the power play at 5:23 of the second period of play. That was Bootland's second power play goal of the season. Bootland also assisted on the game's first goal scored by Matt Ellis 48 seconds into the game.

The game-winning goal in the 4-3 win over Cincinnati on Tuesday was scored by Tim Verbeek. That was Verbeek's first game winning goal of the season. He was the thirteen different player to score a game winning goal for the Storm this season.

The winning goaltender in Cincinnati last Tuesday was Doug Teskey, stopping 37 of the 40 shots that the Cyclones had on him. That was Teskey's fifteenth win of the season, as well as his fourth consecutive victory. Teskey's win streak was snapped with on Saturday night, as he was the goaltender in Toledo's 4-3 shootout loss to the Cyclones. Teskey's fifteen wins ties him for fourth overall amongst goaltenders in the ECHL in that category.

Cincinnati's forty shots on the Toledo net last Tuesday marked only the second time all season that an opponent has had forty or more shots on a Toledo goaltender. (The other time was on November 16 when Doug Teskey stopped 39 of the 41 shots that the Dayton Bombers fired on him in a 4-2 Toledo victory.) The Storm currently allow an average of 30.67 shots against over the course of the season, which is tenth in the league.

The Storm was out-shot 40-39 in the 4-3 win over Cincinnati last Tuesday. Toledo was also outshot in Peoria on Friday night (30-35). Toledo is now 6-4-0 when getting out-shot by the opponent.

Cincinnati scored two power play goals on the Storm in Tuesday night's game. Although the Storm power play has never given up more than two power play goals in a single game, that marked the eighth time this season that the PK has given up two in a game. Four of those eight games have been against the Cincinnati Cyclones. In Saturday's 4-3 shootout loss to they Cyclones, the Storm gave up one power play goal in four chances. In each of the seven games that Toledo has played against Cincinnati thus far this season, the Cyclones have scored at least one power play goal.

In Friday's 3-2 loss to Peoria, the Storm scored the game's first two goals (the first by Nick Parillo at 9:36 of the first period; and the second at 11:25 of the first period by Wes Mason) and held a 2-0 lead after one period of play. This marked the first time this season that the Storm led after one period and failed to win. Toledo is 16-1-0 when scoring first.

Toledo also led in Peoria after two periods of play, 2-1. This also marked the first time this season that the Storm held a lead after two periods and lost in regulation. Toledo is currently 18-1-1 when leading after two periods.

Toledo's first goal (the first of the game) was scored by Nick Parillo. Prior to that goal, Parillo had gone a span of eight games with the Storm without scoring. (He had scored one during that time span, however, in the American Hockey League while on re-call to the Grand Rapids Griffins.) Friday's goal marked the third time this season that Parillo has scored the game's first goal. Parillo also picked up an assist in Friday night's game, marking his seventh multi-point performance of the season with the Storm. Parillo's 28 points (11g-17a) places him in a tied for eleventh place in the ECHL rookie scoring race.

Nick Parillo had ten shots on goal against Peoria last Friday night. That established an individual game-high for the Storm this season in that category.

Wes Mason scored the second goal of the game for the Storm on Friday night. Mason also scored a big goal for Toledo against the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night. (It was his goal that tied the game at three with just five minutes remaining in regulation time.) Mason has now scored three goals in five games since being re-assigned to the Storm from the Milwaukee Admirals on December 26.

Grady Moore assisted on both of the goals scored by the Storm on Friday night. That was Moore's sixth multi-point performance of the season. Moore also scored the Storm's second goal (to tie things at two at the 7:04 mark of the second period) in the 4-3 shootout loss to the Cincinnati Cyclones. Moore's 24 points (7g-17a) places him tied for eighth place in the ECHL scoring race amongst defensemen.

Both of the goals scored by Toledo in the 3-2 loss to Peoria on Friday night were scored while the team was on the power play. That was the second time in three games that the Storm had scored two goals with the man advantage. (Toledo went 2-9 on the PP against Johnstown in a 3-0 victory on December 28.) Prior to that game, the Storm had gone 12 consecutive games without scoring more than one power play goal in a single game.

On Friday night, the Storm was outscored in the third period, 2-0. In fact, Toledo gave up back-to-back goals 11 seconds apart (@ 8:36 and 8:47) in the third period to fall behind 3-2 to the Rivermen-which is the score by which Peoria won. That marked the fifth time in the six prior games that Toledo had been outscored in the third period. In Saturday's 4-3 shootout loss to Cincinnati, both teams scored a third period goal. In the last seven games, Toledo has been outscored 9-2 in the third period. (Over the course of the season, the Storm has outscored the opposition by a total of 37-33 in the third period.)

In Friday's 3-2 loss to Peoria, the Storm blanked Peoria's power play in seven chances. That marked the ninth time this season that Toledo has kept the opposition's PP off the board. Over the course of the season, the Storm has allowed 32 power play goals against in 205 chances-an 84.4% kill ratio, which is seventh overall in the ECHL.

Tom Draper was the losing goaltender in Friday night's game. That marked Draper's first loss in four starts with the Storm. On Sunday, Draper was released and waived by the Storm.

Darryl Bootland assisted on all three goals for the Storm in the 4-3 shootout loss to the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night. (He also scored on his shootout attempt-shooting second for the Storm.) That was Bootland's first three point performance of his pro career. He also had a goal and an assist in Toledo's 4-3 win over Cincinnati last Tuesday. Bootland has now had five multi-point performances on the season.

The Storm outshot the Cyclones 44-33 on Saturday night. The Storm is 15-3-3 when outshooting the opponent. That marked the tenth time this season (and the fourth time in the last seven games) that Toledo has had 40 or more shots on the opponent's goal. Toledo currently averages 35.76 shots on goal per game which is the best in the ECHL in that category.

In Friday night's game, Cincinnati scored four goals on the Storm, albeit one in the shootout. That marked only the eighth time this season that a team has scored four or more goals on the Storm. Toledo currently has a 2.73 goals against average which is fourth in the league.

On Saturday night, the Storm's power play was kept off the board in the four chances that the team had with the man advantage. That marked the twelfth time this season-but the first time in four games-that the Storm PP was blanked.

Over the course of this season, the Storm has scored 35 power play goals in 209 chances-a 16.7% scoring ratio, which is 16th in the league. On the road this season, Toledo has scored 11 power play goals in 90 chances-a 12.2% scoring ration, which is 24th in the league.

Saturday's game marked the fourth time this season that the Storm has gone to the shootout, where Toledo has won twice and lost twice. (In the other shootouts, the Storm won in Cincinnati on November 6; lost to Wheeling at the Toledo Sports Arena on December 6; won at home against Baton Rouge on December 22).

The Storm shooters went 2 for 5 in Saturday's shootout. Overall, the Storm shooters are 5 for 17 in the shootout.

Cincinnati scored on 3 of their 5 shootout attempts on Saturday. Overall, Storm goaltenders have stopped 13 of the 18 shootout attempts that they have faced. Doug Teskey has stopped 8 of the 13 shootout shots that he has faced.

The Storm is currently 8-6-1 on the road, and this week embarks upon the longest road trip of the season, playing the next five consecutive games on the road. Twelve of the next sixteen games for the Storm will be played on the road.
