Aces Ready for Crucial Stretch

January 6, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – As many as three players could return to the lineup this week as the Anchorage Aces play their first games of 2003.

Captain B.J. Young, defenseman Dave Csumrik, and winger J.J. Wrobel could see action as the Aces welcome Fresno to Sullivan Arena for the first time this season tomorrow and Wednesday night. Both games are scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start. Anchorage is 1-4 on its current homestand but has won two of three meetings with the Falcons this year, all three of which have been played at Fresno's Selland Arena. Young has been out since December 7 and Csumrik has been missing since December 4. Wrobel remains the biggest question mark concerning the HealthSouth injured list after missing all three games of the Idaho series December 27-29 in the aftermath of an injury suffered at home against San Diego one week earlier.

After Wednesday's home game with Fresno, the Aces (10-21-1 overall) head for the road for three games in three cities over three nights, beginning Friday night in Long Beach at 6:30 p.m. AST. The Ice Dogs have just one victory in their last 12 games (1-9-2). Looking at the Inlet Tower Hotel & Suites road schedule a bit further, Anchorage will play Bakersfield Saturday night at Centennial Garden at 6:00 p.m. AST before heading up to Fresno for a Sunday matinee at 4:00 p.m. AST. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.

Don't wait...act now! Everyone who purchases a Super Saturday 5-Pack by January 21, 2003 will be eligible for a chance to win a trip for two to San Diego! Travel with the Aces to sunny Southern California - airfare, accommodations, game tickets and dinner included in the Grand Prize (No purchase necessary, call for details—all season-ticket holders are automatically entered).

Despite being idle this weekend, Dean Larson remains atop the WCHL scoring chart with 40 points. His 16 goals and 24 assists place him in a tie for third in both categories. Yvan Corbin is sixth among the league's scorers at 35 points while his 17 goals trail only Idaho's Marty Flichel (19) for the league lead. Corbin was honored by SportsTicker, a real-time sports news service from ESPN, for his performance in Anchorage's last game, a 4-2 victory over Idaho December 29 that snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Steelheads. He scored twice in the third period to snap a 2-2 tie to go along with a pair of assists in recording his first four-point game of the year. SportsTicker, which bills itself as the world's leading instant sports news and information service, also recognized the Aces for their come-from-behind 4-3 shootout win at Fresno December 17.

During Anchorage's win over Idaho December 29, the Aces and the Anchorage School District teamed up with Costco to provide five lucky children with $100 scholarships. Anchorage Superintendent Carol Comeau performed the ceremonial puck drop while scholarship winners included Ty Boska and Tasha Brooks from Homestead Elementary; Brandon Filer, Creekside Elementary; Randy Putt, Sand Lake Elementary; Thomas Johnson, Wendler Middle School.

All players will be taking a tour of Elmendorf Air Force Base today from 11:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. The team will be holding Military Appreciation Night Friday, January 24, during a 7:00 p.m. game against Fresno. Special pre-game and intermission activities have been scheduled showcasing military personnel and 100 camouflage Aces' jerseys will be given away that night. All groups will be recognized over the public address system and special group prices will be available for those military personnel wishing to attend ($7 for balcony seating, $14 for lower mezzanine). Tickets for military also will be available on-base at the ITT office.

Scout Night has been scheduled for Saturday, January 25, at 7:00 p.m. versus Fresno. The first 1,000 children age 14 and under will receive a rally towel courtesy of The Alaska Club and all scouts are eligible for special group rates.
