Falcons Open New Year with Tight Losses to Idaho
January 6, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
The Fresno Falcons ventured into the toughest building in the league this past weekend but fared better than most by coming away with a single point after two games against the Idaho Steelheads, who are now 16-1-0 at the Bank of America Centre in Boise.
Friday night's game featured a game-tying goal from Falcons defenseman Kayle Short with under three minutes to play, which forced the team's fifth shootout in seven games. Fresno ultimately fell in the shootout, 4-3, but became only the third team all season to steal at least a point from the first-place Steelheads on their home ice.
The Falcons dug themselves a 2-0 hole on Saturday before the game was even five minutes old. They hung in, though, and tied the game at two mid-way through the second period after goals by Drew Schoneck and Kris Porter. Fresno's rally would eventually prove unsuccessful as the Steelheads added the game-winner later in the second and an insurance goal mid-way through the third for a 4-2 victory.
The lone shootout point gained over the weekend drops the Falcons back to .500 at 12-12-4 with 28 points. They hold a two-point edge over the Long Beach Ice Dogs in fourth place in the standings, nine points behind the third-place Bakersfield Condors.
FIVE-GAME WEEK LIES AHEAD
The 28 games the Falcons have played are the fewest of any team in the league, but now their schedule picks up considerably, especially beginning this week with five games on the docket.
Fresno continues its longest road trip to date tomorrow and Wednesday when they face the Anchorage Aces at Sullivan Arena. Both games can be heard on 103.1 FM, The Mountain Cat, beginning at 7:50 p.m. PST with the Mail Boxes Etc. Pre-game Show. The club then returns to California for games at Bakersfield on Friday and Long Beach on Saturday. The pre-game for each begins at 6:50 p.m. PST on The Mountain Cat.
ZOOPERSTARS AND FREDDIE'S BIRTHDAY HIGHLIGHT RETURN TO SELLAND
The Falcons' fifth game of the week finally brings them home on Sunday, Jan. 12, at 5 p.m. The tilt against the Anchorage Aces at Selland Arena will feature between-periods-entertainment from the Zooperstars, as well as Freddie the Falcon's birthday celebration. Tickets are still available for the game at the Selland Arena box office, all Ticketmaster locations and online at www.ticketmaster.com.
PRACTICE SCHEDULE
The Falcons will practice just once this week in Fresno. They will hold their pre-game morning skate on Friday at 11:15 a.m. at Gateway Ice Center prior to leaving for Bakersfield later that afternoon.
