Greensboro Generals News Release
UPCOMING WEEK: The Generals open up a four game homestand this week with three games in three nights at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Generals host their in-state rival Charlotte Checkers on Thursday at 7:00. A Generals victory over the Checkers will give them the Carolina Cup for the first time in franchise history. The Carolina Cup goes to the team that wins the season series between the two clubs. Thursday's contest is also a "Thirsty Thursday" sponsored by R. H. Barringer, with all Anheuser-Busch drafts selling for just one dollar. The Richmond Renegades are next to come to town on Friday night at 7:30. Friday's game is the Generals "Food 2 Families" food drive, held in conjunction with WFMY News2. Anyone bringing four non-perishable food items to the game will get a buy one ticket, get one free offer. The Generals finish the weekend by hosting the Peoria Rivermen Saturday night at 7:30. Fans can stock up on Hanes items on Saturday, with the first 1,000 fans receiving a Hanes tagless t-shirt and a Hanes stress puck. About 500 Hanes stress pucks and water bottles will also be distributed throughout the crowd during the game. All games this season can be heard on the Generals new flagship radio station, WPET AM-950. You can also hear the games online by logging on to www.greensborogenerals.com.
LAST WEEK: 12/31 TRENTON 1, GREENSBORO 2 (SO) ¨ The Generals got their only goal in regulation from Chris Allen, who tied the score 1-1 early in the second period. This game wasn't decided until a tense eight-round shootout, with Greensboro earning the victory over the Titans on Pete Gardiner's game-deciding goal. Daniel Berthiaume picked up the win, making 34 of 35 saves plus six of eight shootout saves on the night.
1/2 READING 5, GREENSBORO 3 ¨ Despite taking a 1-0 lead into the second period on a Pete Gardiner goal, the Generals couldn't stop the high-powered Royals offense. Reading scored three unanswered goals in the second period for a 3-1 lead. Chris Bell closed the gap to 3-2 early in the third, and following another Reading goal, Gardiner's second of the night kept the Generals within striking distance at 4-3. But they would get no closer, as Reading sealed the win with an empty net goal.
1/3 READING 1, GREENSBORO 5 ¨ This night belonged to rookie Matt Chandler. Scoring one goal in his previous 25 games, Chandler netted a natural hat trick, scoring the first three goals of the game all in the second period. The Generals cruised from there, getting scores from Shane Campbell and Pete Gardiner in the third period. Lost in Chandler's spotlight was goaltender Jamie Hodson, who stopped 48 of 49 shots on the night.
1/4 GREENSBORO 5, RICHMOND 2 ¨ The Generals played another complete game in defeating the Renegades for the third straight time. Mark Turner put the Generals on top 1-0 after one period, and Ole Kjenstad added a second period goal for a 2-0 lead. It was 2-1 in the third period when Turner planted his second goal of the night, then Sam Ftorek put the game away with a pair of goals in the final two minutes.
