Record Crowd Witnesses New Year's Win

Fort Wayne, IN --- A UHL and Fort Wayne record crowd of 10,228 Komet fans were on hand New Year's Eve for the Komet's 4-1 win over the visiting Muskegon Fury. The record attendance shattered the previous Komet home record crowd of 10,009 set at the Komet's home opener Nov. 9. It also topped the UHL's single game attendance record of 10,076 set at Quad City Nov. 28, 1997. The Komets are the first team in the league to surpass the 100,000 mark in attendance and have had crowds of 6,000+ for 6 consecutive home games. Fort Wayne leads the UHL with an average game attendance of 6,943.

The Komet's 4-1 win over Muskegon Tuesday improved Fort Wayne's New Year's eve record to 3-1-0 since joining the UHL in 1999. The Komets outshot the Fury 41-17 as goaltender Tom Lawson earned his 50th career win making 16 saves. It was also Lawson's 6th straight game of allowing 1 goal or less and the Komet's 6th straight home win.

Friday the Komets traveled to Muskegon and were clipped 3-2 by the Fury. It was the first of 3 visits to Muskegon this season as the Komet's record against the Fury slipped to 1-2-1. Saturday the Komets dropped their 3rd straight road decision 5-3 at Port Huron. The game was center Adam Lewis' 200th regular season game and David-Alexandre Beauregard dished an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to 5 games (2g, 3a).

This weekend the Komets play at Quad City Friday before returning home to host Port Huron Saturday and Kalamazoo Sunday. Tickets for all Komet home games are on sale at the Coliseum Ticket Office and online at www.ticketmaster.com.

Lawson Goaltender of the Month again.....for the 2nd straight month, Tom Lawson has been named the UHL's Goaltender of the Month. Lawson was honored after posting a 4-1-3 record, 1.92 goals against average, a .923 save percentage and 1 shutout in 9 appearances during December. Lawson becomes the first Komet goalie to take the UHL monthly honor twice in a season. He also received his 3rd honor as Goaltender of the Week for the week ending Dec. 29, 2002.

Friday is Marathon Night.....once again this year, the Komets have teamed with Marathon to offer fans a chance to get gas at Marathon for a free Komet ticket offer. 3 fill-ups stamped on a Marathon/Komet Fill Up card gets customers a "Buy One, Get One Free" ticket offer good on select Marathon nights at Komet home games all season long. The next Marathon Night is this Saturday, Jan. 11, when the Komets host Port Huron at 7:35pm. Fill Up cards can be redeemed at the Coliseum Ticket Office.

"77" returns to Komet lineup.....Sunday, Jan. 12, is Steve Fletcher Night as the Komets host the Kalamazoo Wings at 5:05pm. "Fletch" is an all-time Fort Wayne fan favorite playing parts of 7 seasons (6 straight from 1990-1996) with the Komets. Fletcher last appeared in a Komet uniform when he skated 2 games at the start of the 1995-96 IHL season before being traded to Atlanta. His appearance Sunday will be Fletcher's 344th game as a Komet. Fletcher, the Komet's all-time IHL penalty minute leader with 1,706 minutes in penalties, resides in Fort Wayne and has been practicing with the Komets in recent weeks.

"All Skate" Sunday.....fans can bring their skates to Sunday's game for a free after game skate on coliseum ice. All Komet Sunday games are Wendy's Family Nights with free post-game skates. Discount coupons for Sunday games are available at all participating Wendy's in the Fort Wayne area.

Get in the Zone.....the Komets and Hagerman Construction, the main contractor for the renovation of the Memorial Coliseum, have set up the "Komet Construction Zone" for the 2002-03 season giving local children's organizations a chance to see Komet hockey. 50 tickets to sit free in the "Construction Zone" will be donated to a local children's organization. In addition to the free tickets, groups will receive official Hagerman construction helmets and more courtesy of Hagerman Construction and the Komets. Tickets can be ordered through the Komet office at (260) 483-0011.
