Bridgeport Islanders News Release
Bridgeport, Conn. - The Sound Tigers' top line of Trevor Smith, Kurtis McLean and Mike Iggulden combined for eight points in the team's 4-1 victory over the Springfield Falcons. McLean scored twice while Iggulden and Jeff Tambellini each added a goal to improve the Sound Tigers' record to 19-7-1-2, giving them 41 points this season, tying them for the top spot in the American Hockey League with the Hershey Bears. Peter Mannino was in goal for the fifth straight game, earning his ninth win of the season making 23 saves. Rob Schremp had the lone goal of the game for the Falcons.
McLean opened the scoring for the Sound Tigers with just under four minutes to play in the opening period. Iggulden hit Smith with a long breakout pass that sprung him on a two-on-one with McLean. Smith took the puck on his back-hand and feathered a pass through the defenseman to McLean at the back-door where he one-timed the puck past Springfield starting goalie, Devan Dubnyk's blocker. The goal was McLean's eighth of the season and gave the Sound Tigers the 1-0 lead entering the second period.
Both goalies would keep the game dead-locked at 1-0 in favor of the Sound Tigers in the middle frame. Mannino faced his biggest barrage of shots, turning aside all 11 shots he faced.
With former Sound Tiger, Ryan O'Marra, in the penalty box for hooking, the Iggulden was able to double the Sound Tigers lead to 2-0. Smith set the play up from the left corner and whipped a shot towards the net that Dubnyk made the initial save on, but the rebound popped to his left where Iggulden was waiting to tap in his team leading, 15th goal of the season. Andrew MacDonald also had an assist on the tally coming 8:17 into the third period. Springfield would finally get on the score-board 40 seconds later when Schremp wristed a shot from the right circle that went past Mannino's glove to cut the Sound Tigers' lead to 2-1. Bryan Lerg and Colin McDonald assisted on Schremp's second goal of the season. The Sound Tigers would return to the man-advantage just over the halfway mark of the final period of regulation and set-up Tambellini for his second goal in as many games. Smith fed a pass to McLean at the top of the left point who played catch with Tambellini. After trading several passes, McLean laid a pass over to Tambellini who one-timed the puck past the glove of Dubnyk for his second goal of the season to give the Sound Tigers the 3-1 lead. McLean would seal the game with an empty net goal on assists from Sean Bentivoglio and Jeremy Colliton.
The Sound Tigers finished the game 2-for-6 on the power-play and were perfect on the penalty-kill, going 4-for-4. Dubnyk, who held his team in the game for most of the contest, made 35 saves.
