Peoria Rivermen News Release

Peoria, Ill. (December 19, 2008) - The Iowa Chops withstood a late offensive push by the Peoria Rivermen and came away with a 2-1 victory on Friday night at Carver Arena. It was just the third regulation loss for the Rivermen at home this season and the first time it has come at the hands of a West Division opponent.

Despite the Rivermen offense receiving a boost in the form of forwards Cam Paddock and Chris Conner being assigned to Peoria from the NHL prior to game time, the Rivermen offense couldn't find one past J.P Levasseur until the final six minutes of the third period. When they did, it was defenseman Steve Wagner who scored his second goal of the season.

By that point, the Chops had built themselves a 2-0 lead with a goal near the end of the second period and another early in the third.

Chris Holt put together another strong performance by stopping 27 of 29 shots in the loss. He is 4-2-0 while with Peoria and has a 1.51 goals-against average. He was able to keep the Chops off the board until the 16:44 mark of the second period.

Josh Green opened the scoring by following up a blocked shot taken by Drew Miller. It was his ninth of the season as Holt was caught out of position after he moved to block the initial shot that never made it through to the net.

Francis Wathier may have scored the Chops' second goal but it was created by the work of Rob Dingle. At 7:58 of the third, Dingle wristed a shot on net from the left circle and crashed the goal for his rebound. Holt thought he had the puck pinned against his chest but it dropped to his feet and Dingle thrust the it across the crease where Wathier was crashing the goal.

The Rivermen pulled within one with 5:21 left in regulation as Wagner found a loose puck in front to spoil the bid for Levasseur's first shutout of the season. Chris Porter's shot was blocked by a defender and bounced onto the stick of Wagner.

Five out of the last seven goals scored by the Rivermen have come from defensemen.
