P-Bruins Defeat Marlies in a Shootout 4-3

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Toronto Marlies 4-3 in a shootout Friday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins got their goals in regulation from Zach Hamill, Martin St. Pierre and Jordan Knackstedt. In the shootout St. Pierre scored twice and Martins Karsums scored once. The first place P-Bruins are back at home at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday versus the Springfield Falcons at 4:05 p.m. for a Family Game.

In the opening period, the P-Bruins got on the board at the 12:47 mark. Jeremy Reich held the puck along the right boards and sent it to Johnny Boychuk at the blue line. He fed it to Hamill in front of the net as Hamill tallied his third goal of the season. Providence took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Toronto tied the game at one at the 7:11 mark of the second period. Max Taylor scored his first goal of the season, with Stefano Giliati and Ben Ondrus getting the assists. Providence retook the lead at the 13:24 mark. Knackstedt flipped the puck up the boards and into the neutral zone for St. Pierre, giving him a breakaway. St. Pierre netted his tenth goal of the season. The Marlies tied the game at two at the 15:06 mark. Mark Bell netted his fourth goal of the season, while Richard Petiot recorded the lone assist. The game went into the second intermission tied at two.

In the third period, Providence went back up a goal at the 9:38 mark. St. Pierre sent the puck to Peter Schaefer in the corner and he passed it to Knackstedt outside of the crease. Knackstedt tipped the puck into the net for his third goal of the season. Toronto battled back to tie the game at three with a 5-on-3 power play goal at the 16:57 mark. Tim Stapleton tallied his fifth goal of the season, with Staffan Kronwall and Jiri Tlusty getting the assists. The game went into overtime tied at three.

After a scoreless overtime the game went to a shootout where the P-Bruin St. Pierre and the Marlies Stapleton each scored in the first round. In round three Karsums scored to put the P-Bruins a head 2-1, but in round five the Marlies got a goal from Kronwall to force a round six, where St. Pierre scored his second shootout goal of the game to give Providence the 4-3 victory.

Tuukka Rask stopped 36 of 39 shots in regulation and 4 of 6 shots he faced in the shootout for the P-Bruins, while Justin Pogge made 28 saves in regulation and 3 saves in the shootout for the Marlies.  The P-Bruins were 0-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Providence heads on the road Saturday to take on the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center at 7:00 p.m. before wrapping up the week at home at The Dunk Sunday versus the Springfield Falcons at 4:05 p.m. for a Family Game.
