Moose Top Flames 3-1

December 19, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Abbotsford Heat News Release

The Flames dropped a 3-1 decision on Saturday night in Manitoba. The Moose scored in each period and received contributions from three different goal scorers. David Van der Gulik scored the lone Flames goal. The loss extended the Flames winless streak to a franchise-record tying seven games (0-4-2-1).

Michel Ouellet netted the only goal of the opening period when he scored during a Moose power play at the 8:46 mark. Ouellet scored when he found a loose puck on the Flames goal line following a shot by Mark Derlago. The veteran sniper knocked the puck into the Flames net to put Manitoba in front. The highlight of the first period for Quad City was killing a 5-on-3 Manitoba power play that lasted nearly two full minutes late in the opening frame.

The teams traded second period markers as Manitoba's Mark Cullen scored at even strength just 1:21 before a power-play goal by David Van der Gulik. Cullen netted his 11th goal of 2008-09 when he tipped a point shot by Daniel Rahimi past Quad City's Matt Keetley. Quad City responded on the man advantage. Carsen Germyn sent a slap shot from the point into the Manitoba crease. Moose netminder Karl Goehring was able to make the initial save, but could not deny Van der Gulik on the rebound attempt. The Flames winger netted his eighth goal of the season to slice the Moose lead in half. The teams were still separated by a single goal as the middle period expired.

Mario Bliznak netted an insurance goal with 10:52 left in regulation when he buried a one-timer following a feed from Alexandre Buldoc. A late power play for Quad City wasn't enough to beat Karl Goehring as he stopped 13 third period shots and Manitoba earned the win by a final of 3-1.
