Worcester Red Sox News Release
WORCESTER, M.A. - In a game that was tied five times and featured four lead changes, Nick Sogard delivered a walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Worcester Red Sox (20-22) a 13-12 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (28-13) on Thursday night at Polar Park. The game featured a combined 25 runs, 28 hits and 16 walks.
Sogard came to the plate in a 12-12 game with no one on and two out in the bottom of the ninth. He had homered once already from the right side, and working against right-hander Ron Marinaccio, he delivered the game-winning swing from the left side. On an 0-1 pitch, he hammered a fastball over the wall in right, sealing Worcester's first walkoff victory of the season.
Sogard became the first player to homer from both sides for a Red Sox Triple-A affiliate since Pawtucket's Drew Sutton, versus Gwinnett on May 9, 2011.
Three hours and 30 minutes earlier, SWB took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout and a Taylor Trammell double, before the WooSox offense answered immediately.
Chase Meidroth and Sogard lined singles to start the bottom of the first, and Nathan Hickey opened the home team's scoring with another line drive for an RBI double. With two on, Bobby Dalbec stepped up and annihilated a 2-0 offering to left for a go-ahead three-run home run. Dalbec's long ball went 409 feet, his fourth in 13 Triple-A games.
The RailRiders made Worcester opener Vladimir Gutierrez work once again, this time in the second. They walked three times to begin the frame, and Caleb Durbin tied the game with a two-run single. Worcester went to the bullpen, calling on Naoyuki Uwasawa for his second appearance since returning from Boston. With runners on first and third and no one out, Uwasawa induced a groundout and struck out T.J. Rumfield, but Carlos Narvaez gave SWB the lead with a two-run double to left.
For the second time on the night, Worcester rallied from two runs down to tie the game. In the fourth, Kolozsvary walked, and after a pair of strikeouts, Kolozsvary stole second. That brought Sogard to the plate-he saw five pitches, worked a 2-2 count and on his sixth, smashed a game-tying two-run home run over the wall in left, his first of two on Thursday. Sogard, who hit seven home runs in 112 games for the WooSox in 2023, has four in his first 35 appearances of 2024.
Uwasawa finished his relief outing with the following line: 5 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, charged with two runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run single by Trammell. The WooSox trailed 8-6 entering the bottom of the sixth, but tied their largest single-inning rally of the season to take command of the game.
Kolosvary led off with a single against former Worcester reliever Oddanier Mosqueda. After a fielder's choice, Meidroth walked, and Sogard drove home one on a single. A strikeout and a walk set up the bases loaded with two outs for Jamie Westbrook, and he delivered one of the big swings of the night: a two-run single to left, putting the WooSox on top 9-8. Pablo Reyes was next, and with two on, he crushed the team's third home run and his first since being outrighted to Worcester. Reyes's homer capped off a six-run inning, the fourth time Worcester has reached that mark in a frame this season.
But once more, SWB clambered back in to the game. They got one back in the seventh on a Jose Rojas solo home run off Melvin Adon, then got a two-run double from Oscar Gonzalez and a game-evening RBI single by Jeter Downs.
That set up Sogard's dramatic swing in the ninth, capping off a 4-for-6, 2 homer, 4 RBI game for the 26-year-old.
The WooSox continue the six-game series on Friday at 6:05 p.m. against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, affiliate of the New York Yankees. On the mound, Richard Fitts (3-1, 3.51) gets the start for Worcester. Television coverage is on NESN+, while radio coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
