St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The hopes were high for the St. Paul Saints to achieve their first three-game win streak of the season. Coming off a 13-run performance on Tuesday, having Major League rehabber Byron Buxton in the lineup, and Louie Varland on the mound for the Saints, had things pointing in the right direction. Unfortunately, the Saints didn't score a run and the Storm Chasers put up five in the second as the Saints lost 6-0 at CHS Field in front of 4,015.
The Storm Chasers put up a big, crooked number in the second as they sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs. Nick Loftin led off with a single to left. C.J. Alexander followed with a single to right, putting runners at first and second. Ryan Fitzergald then hit a grounder to the left of second baseman Tony Kemp. He slid to field the ball, spun, and threw to second, but the throw wasn't in time and the bases were loaded. Tyler Gentry gave the Storm Chasers a 2-0 lead with a two-run double to right-center. With one out Austin Nola singled to right driving in a pair making it 4-0. Matt Wallner's throw home went into the Storm Chasers dugout and that sent Nola to third. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Drew Waters increasing the lead to 5-0.
The Saints offense, meanwhile, couldn't do much. DaShawn Keirsey Jr. had a two-out single in the first and the next hit for the Saints was Keirsey's leadoff double in the fourth. He moved to third on a ground out, but was left stranded on a shallow fly out to center and a strikeout.
Waters made it 6-0 Storm Chasers with a solo home run to lead off the fifth, his fourth of the season.
The Saints best chance to score came in the sixth when Diego Castillo led off with a single to left-center. With one out, Keirsey Jr. walked. Wallner then hit a ground ball to first and Nick Pratto's throw to second hit Keirsey Jr. and caromed into center field loading the bases. Back-to-back strikeouts, however, ended the inning.
Buxton, in his first game on Major League rehab, went 0-3 with two strikeouts.
The same two teams meet in game three of a six-game series on Thursday night at CHS Field at 6:37 p.m. The Saints send RHP Randy Dobnak (3-3, 4.42) to the mound against Storm Chasers RHP Jonathan Bowlan (5-1, 2.61). The game can be seen on the Saints Broadcast Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities Metro, MLB.TV, MiLB.TV, the Bally Live app, and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
