Smyth returns to Gwinnett

The Gwinnett Gladiators announced today that forward Adam Smyth has been assigned to the team from the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League. In a separate transaction, defenseman Jon Awe was called up to the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League.

Smyth returns to the Gladiators where he appeared in 49 games during his rookie season with Gwinnett last year leading the Gladiators with 217 penalty minutes. Smyth scored 6 goals and added 10 assists for 16 points last year.

Under contract to the Atlanta Thrashers, the Wiarton, Ontario native has appeared in two games this season with the Chicago Wolves posting 11 penalty minutes.

Awa makes his first trip to the American Hockey League as the defenseman was called up to the Portland Pirates. A rookie out of Northeastern University, Awe led Northeastern University defensemen during his junior season with 13 points.

The Memphis, Tennessee native appeared in 5 games with the Gladiators posting an assists and 9 penalty minutes.

Smyth should be available for the Gladiators for tonight's 7:35 p.m. match up against the Greenville Grrrowl at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
