Fantastic Fight to the Finish

The Wheeling Nailers experienced one of their most thrilling victories of the season on Friday night, as they played their first home game in 19 days. Wheeling trailed the Reading Royals 2-1 at the 12-minute mark of the second period, but from that point on, the story of the evening was offense. Zack Torquato, Derek Army, Shawn Skelly, and Chaz Johnson all lit the lamp for the Nailers in a span of 5:23, erasing 2-1 and 3-2 deficits, grabbing a 5-3 lead. Morgan Ellis added another tally in the third period, which turned out to be pivotal, as the home team held on for the 6-5 victory. Franky Palazzese made a season-high 43 saves, earning his first win since December 5th.

A Beat Down of the Beast

The Elmira Jackals are also coming off of a win on Friday night, as they limited the Brampton Beast to 17 shots on goal in a 4-1 triumph at First Arena. Elmira needed just 57 seconds to open the scoring, as Thomas Nesbitt got his team off on the right foot. Ryan Rashid ended up with two goals and an assist for the Jackals, including the game winning tally, which came shorthanded at the 9:38 mark of the middle frame. Mike Bergin connected for the other goal, while Travis Fullerton earned his 11th win of the season, making 16 saves between the pipes. The win brought Elmira's point total to 40, lifting the Jackals into fourth place in the East Division.

Three More on the Man Advantage

The penalty box is never a fun place for players to go, but for opposing players at WesBanco Arena, that location has been particularly uncomfortable. In Friday night's 6-5 win over the Royals, the Nailers converted on three of six power play opportunities, giving them 18 goals on 60 attempts with the man advantage in 15 home games. Those numbers come together for a 30.0% success rate on home ice, which is 2.5% better than the second place Toledo Walleye. Zack Torquato factored into the scoring on all three power play markers, as he tied Riley Brace for the team lead with ten points on the man advantage.

A Long Road of Games

Fans in Elmira might experience some hockey withdrawal during the months of December and January, as their Jackals are in the midst of a stretch which sees them play just four home games in 58 days. Elmira has gone 1-1-0 at First Arena during that time thus far, with two games scheduled against the Reading Royals next weekend. Over half of the Jackals' road games will take place during that nearly two-month period, as Saturday will be the 12th of 19 tilts on enemy ice in that time frame. Elmira has posted a 5-5-1 record through the first 11 contests, which have taken place in seven different cities. When all is said and done, the Jackals will travel to 11 visiting buildings between December 9th and January 31st.

It's Been a Couple of Months

Saturday night marks the fourth of 13 head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Jackals this season, as well as the second of seven battles between the two clubs at WesBanco Arena. Despite the high number of games that will eventually take place between the two sides, it has been 47 days since the last clash, which was a 2-0 Wheeling win on November 23rd at First Arena. Elmira has only visited the Ohio Valley once thus far this season, and that was a morning game on November 19th that saw the Nailers erase a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 shootout victory. Wheeling has won two of the three tilts so far in a season series that will see three games in each of the regular season's final three months. This is the first of five straight home games for the Nailers against the Jackals.

Elmira is the opposition on January 10th, as the Nailers will be holding a Princess Party from 6-7. Only 100 tickets are available for the party. That game will also be the annual Girl Scout Night. The first 1,000 kids (14 & under) in attendance will receive a backpack, courtesy of H.E. Neumann. The princesses will be available in the main concourse throughout the evening.

Indy pays a visit on January 11th for a Family Funday with $5 kids tickets, a post game skate with the team, and another Oglebay Good Zoo Day.

January 23rd & 24th will be a two-game series at home against Fort Wayne, as the new jumbotron will make its debut. Saturday's game will be Star Wars Night, as well as a bomber hat giveaway to the first 1,000 kids (14 & under) in attendance.

Wheeling Nailers 2014-15 season tickets, flex tickets, group tickets and single-game tickets are on sale now. For more information, call 304-234-GOAL or visit wheelingnailers.com.
