Oilers Settle for Single Point in Shootout Loss to Rush

January 10, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Tulsa Oilers News Release

RAPID CITY, SD - The Tulsa Oilers were unable to capitalize on a lengthy 4-on-3 overtime power play and ended up on the wrong side of a 2-1 shootout decision against the Rapid City Rush on Friday night at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Daniel Barczuk zipped a snap shot through the legs of Kevin Carr to give the Rush the extra point and drop the Oilers to 4-3 in shootouts this season.

The only Tulsa goal of the contest came off the stick of Tommy Mele at 9:32 of the first period. Oilers winger Charles Lachance scooped up a turnover in the neutral zone and dished to Mele who was cutting down the right wing side of the Rapid City zone. A well-placed wrist shot beat John Griggs to the blocker side to give Mele his 10th goal of the season and provide the Oilers a 1-0 cushion. Mele became the seventh Oilers player to reach double-digits in goals and the one-goal advantage held up throughout the second period.

After shutting out the Rush for more than 103 consecutive minutes, Carr was finally beaten on a power play one-timer from Jesse Schultz. With Kevin Noble in the penalty box for closing his hand on the puck, Rush rookie Cody Ferriero flipped a pass between two Oilers defenders that was slammed into the net by Schultz.

At the 1:39 mark of overtime, Rush winger Dylan Clarke collided with Oilers rookie Jeff Jubinville along the right wing boards. Clarke was given a five-minute major for charging and a game misconduct which gifted the Oilers a power play for the remainder of the extra session. Over the final 3:21 of overtime, Rush players blocked Tulsa shots from all angles and Griggs stood firm to keep the score level at 1-1 and force a shootout.

Adam Pleskach, the first Tulsa shooter, scored on Griggs to give the Oilers an early edge but the Rapid City netminder shut down the next four Oilers attempts. Patrick Cullen beat Carr over the blocker shoulder and Barczuk, the fifth and final shooter, sealed the victory for the home side.

Rapid City earned just its third win of the season when trailing after two periods and the Oilers were able to earn points in consecutive road games for the first time since mid-November.

The Oilers and Rush finish out their three-game series at RPCC tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m.
