DULUTH, Ga. - For the second time this week, the Gladiators (10-19-1-1) take on the South Carolina Stingrays (16-11-1-4) at The Arena at Gwinnett Center. On Thursday, the two teams fought a low-scoring and physical 2-1 game that went in favor of South Carolina.
The Gladiators tied the score at 1 early in the third period, thanks to Tristin Llewellyn's shot from the top of the zone on the power play, and Sean Berkstresser's stick tip in front of Jeff Jakaitis. The score would remain tied, 1-1, through regulation, and for the first time this season, the Gladiators reached the shootout. Gwinnett was the last team in the league to reach the shootout; Alaska was the other remaining holdout, but they played their first shootout on December 20th.
Glads Notes:
Power Surge: The Gladiators power play cashed in again on Thursday night, which is no surprise. Gwinnett's power play is clicking at a 19.3% conversion rate, good for 8th in the league. At home, the team is 11-for-60 (18.3%), 14th in the league. On the road, they are even better - 10-for-49 (20.4%), 5th in the ECHL. The team has scored a power play goal in 10 of their last 14 games played.
S.C. Stands for Scared of Carey: In the two games that Greg Carey has played against South Carolina, he has tallied four goals and picked up a shootout goal as well. The four goals came in regulation on November 9th, and the shootout goal came on Thursday night, in the fifth round.
Walk On: Brenden Walker was named as an alternate to the 2015 ECHL All-Star Classic on Thursday. The second-year forward was rewarded for his 20-point (seven goals, 13 assists) season, through 26 games played.
Gladiators Ahoy: Four players currently on the Gladiators roster have been assigned from their AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates- James Melindy, Dyson Stevenson, Greg Carey, and Mike Lee - and six more - Joel Hanley (POR), Dan O'Donoghue (POR), Louis Domingue (POR), Jordon Southorn (POR), Bretton Stamler (HFD), and Casey Pierro-Zabotel (NOR) - have spent time in the AHL this year.
Milestones: Tristin Llewellyn played in his 200th professional match on Thursday ... Garry Nunn is one goal away from his 50th professional tally, and scored his 150th professional point last week ... Marshall Everson played in his 75th game with Gwinnett last Saturday ... Geoff Paukovich is two goals from his 50th as a pro, and two points away from his 100th ECHL point.
Streaks: Casey Pierro-Zabotel has two goals and 12 assists in his last 12 games ... Marshall Everson has two goals and six assists in his last eight games ...
